@despeaux p.s. thanks for sharing that, though. Have long admired Mark Morford but hadn't followed his stuff lately. 6 hours ago
@despeaux It does at our site. Of course we also have the perennial cranks etc. But that's this wknd's 2nd "comments suck" story I've seen. 6 hours ago
@despeaux I wish for once a columnist would write about the GREAT side of reader comments. crime-solving, traffic-advising, help-offering... 6 hours ago
The selling continued till the last moments. Now, if you have leftovers, think about Northwest Center … or as mentioned earlier, WestSide Baby … or West Seattle Helpline, which says it’s gotten a great response in donations to its new Clothesline clothing bank …
If you’re walking in the Alki vicinity, no problem. If you’re looking to park, hm, a little bit of a challenge. So we shot a photo while driving by. Sales continue everywhere till 3 …
Click’s John Smersh told us our visit came during the only real lull they’ve had all day. Meantime, we’ve already proceeded from there to Alki, and it’s summer conditions at the beach …
They told us their sale’s been going really well – front and back of the house – and they have a bake sale too! We also drove by nearby Roxhill Elementary but looks like their sale’s inside (if anybody has Roxhill pix later, please send!), accessible off Roxbury.
It costs some $ to travel to do good deeds, and that’s what this sale is all about – one of several fundraising sales today – if you haven’t been, there’s still more than two hours to go!
Thanks to Hillary for the photo – and the memorable sale listing verbiage about having moved from the East Coast with too much stuff! She reports enjoying some conversations with shoppers so far, as well as making a few sales, and says, “This is a blast!”
Just pulled a search to see who else had “tweeted” about West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day and “re-tweeted” a few of the notes. Even if you don’t have a Twitter account, you can still see what we’ve been saying at twitter.com/westseattleblog – and if you’ve got a WSCGSD note for us (or breaking news etc. ANY time), message @westseattleblog … thanks!
Just sent us a photo – thanks – everybody shopping/selling is welcome to send a pic, just be sure you include the address so we can find you on the map (and don’t forget the contests – those pix can be sent later – most creative sign, most unusual item sold, most unusual item bought).
Not only does WSHS have a sale going to raise money for Grad Night (only a month away!!!) but also a car wash. Various groups at the school have scheduled car washes for Saturdays that often turned out to be rainy but TODAY, finally, the SUN has arrived, hooray. More to come …
A little out of the way but don’t miss it, particularly if you are interested in gardening – the P-Patch is right behind the Lincoln Park Annex tennis courts off Fauntleroy Way SW, across from the 76 station that’s on the north end of the park, not even a mile south of Morgan Junction. We’ve been watching these folks’ organizational e-mails (since we’re on their mailing list) and they have quite the operation set up for today – go see ‘em.
Custom purses, just a few of the items we spotted outside the store. Lots of businesses having sales too – and The Junction is a hotspot for business, group, individual sales.
We stopped by for some video in our very first post, while setup was under way a couple hours ago – here’s the sale in higher gear – thanks to Lora at Hotwire for sending the photo – dozens of sellers have set up tables here.
This is a fundraiser for a student trip to Japan – and they have a LOT going on – bake sale, hot dogs, we’d call it a must-see … we just dropped in to get a people pic, and keep moving!
Alki Lodge #152 has tons of stuff and this is just a bit of it. They’re there till 4 pm, later than the overall official end time of 3 pm. (If you’re selling, remember that the Northwest Center dropoff spot in The Junction is open later today too.)
We’ll post pix here as the day goes on in individual posts identifying the sales by address, unless it’s some other kind of update … on West Seattle Blog, we’ll have running updates with multiple notes and photos in each. Just in case you are keeping track.
(video added 8:25 am, setup at Hotwire Coffee group site)
Shopping/selling officially begins at 9 am, but a few have gotten started early, and setup certainly is under way. First photos shortly. Lots of updates here throughout the day, as well as on Twitter (twitter.com/westseattleblog) and a few via Facebook (where we are WS Blog). Send your photos – garagesale@westseattleblog.com!
Caveat – this is the Google Map *online only, does-not-print-well* version. We gave out 200 copies of the printed version at today’s Sustainable West Seattle Festival, but are trying to tweak the map display a little before (a) printing more copies for distribution to local pickup spots tomorrow and (b) linking the PDF for you to download and print your own copy. That said, in case you have some time to spare tonight, we are offering you THIS version of the map in case you want an early look at whether there are sales near your house, sales with any particular items you’re looking for, etc. PLEASE – honor the fact that these sales are 9 am-3 pm next Saturday, and don’t contact anyone sooner – we made the map earlier this year (the previous four years, it was available just for a couple days ahead of the sale day) mostly just in hopes earlier availability would help shoppers plan better. Also note: While the sales are numbered, the list in the left margin of the map is NOT in order (the numbering was done north to south after entering all the addresses) – to navigate the map, use the scale on the left side of the window to zoom in and out, and when you see a sale number you want a closer look at, click the place marker (this is best done when zoomed in VERY closely, as the place markers have invisible edges beyond the circles) and it will open a “balloon” with the exact address and the short sale description. OR – look at the list in the left margin and when you see a sale you want to find, click the address line, and you will be taken to that spot on the map. Again, here’s the link to the Google Map online-only version. We will let you know tomorrow when we have the printable version ready – the sales have the same numbers, but otherwise the layout is very different, designed for use as a physical document.
11:59 pm next Saturday (April 25), we need to have your registration in hand – either online (which means if you start registering by, oh, say, 11:50 or so that night to get through the form and PayPal, you should be more than golden) or by postal mail (we’d suggest sending the form no later than Thursday) … We have those courtyard sales at Hotwire and C & P Coffee (check if there’s still room), we have school sales (including Roxhill and Gatewood Elementaries), block sales, estate sales, and dozens of great individual sales. Want to make a few extra bucks? Clean up and sell out! Er, outside, we mean. 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 9th, is the date/time for the official West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – our second year coordinating it, but this is the 5th annual WSCGSD!
Close to 90 sales now, with one week of registration remaining. Our focus the past few days has been stepping up the marketing, now that we’re three weeks away from The Big Day – we’ve spent the past two days distributing the first wave of posters (we’ll have a revised poster once the registration period is closed, and we’ll post a link here so you can print one out if you want to put it up at work, school, wherever) and also starting to line up the advertising — just started with the granddaddy of ‘em all, the Little Nickel (in print and online) … one of us worked for a similar publication many, many years ago and many, many miles away, so we have a soft spot for such things. But online is the most important way to get the word out now, and since we are major Facebook and Twitter users at West Seattle Blog, we’ve been utilizing those “channels” too. (On FB, become a fan of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – go here.)
Regional promotion – including your spot on The Map, and an “ad” of up to 10-words on The Map. As we’ve mentioned before, this is the FIRST major community-wide garage sale day in Seattle this year, so bargain-hunters will be dying to get out and shop (not to mention, economic belt-tightening makes garage saling more popular than ever). West Seattle will be THE place to be on May 9 — be part of it!
Both are reachable through their shops, with info at their websites. In addition to an extended registration window (three full weeks this year), we’re adding another time-related improvement: More time to get/review the map. We’ll be promoting West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day at the Sustainable West Seattle Festival on the preceding Sunday, May 3, so it makes perfect sense to have the map ready in time to hand out at the festival — extra days to review it and plot your sale travels!
Ready to sign up? The forms are linked here (and within a day or two, we will also have a few locations listed for you to pick up a form in person, if you prefer).
And if you’re on Facebook – where West Seattle Blog has a lively group of friends as “WS Blog” – we’ve just created a WS Community Garage Sale Day page that you can “become a fan” of and participate in: Find it here.
“Christmas at Skylark” (3803 Delridge), as dubbed by Patrick the Sales Guy, who has been making most of the photography rounds today. However, in the past hour, your editor here and Junior Member of the Team broke away from WSB HQ to see what’s up. Dropped by a couple sales incognito, west of California, north of The Junction; bought strawberry lemonade from the kids at 47th/Dakota, wandered into an alley sale a few blocks east and got the unsolicited proclamation from the saleholder that “All the good stuff’s gone; it’s been a busy morning.” Well, not ALL the good stuff; Junior Member was furious we wouldn’t let him spend $5 on a big hulking scanner. Meantime, back at the sales – here’s the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle sale at 5637 42nd SW:
Along Fauntleroy (5962), two pix from the PB&J Textiles sale:
We drove through The Junction and noted group sale sites in the vicinity were still jumping, as were Junction businesses (megaline outside Bakery Nouveau, even at 1:30 pm). There’s still an hour to shop; get a map here if you need it.
BULLETIN! Sunshine just broke out at the halfway mark. Now, more of the bigger sites:
That’s the bake sale at the North Delridge Neighborhood Council sale, 2512 SW Genesee, raising money for tot-size play equipment at Cottage Grove Park. Heading northwest from there:
Booming business when we stopped by the Log House Museum sale (3003 61st SW). Next – in the Admiral District, Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor; 2210 California SW) is participating:
South of The Junction, there’s a group sale (like Hotwire & Freshy’s, both shown earlier) at C and P Coffee (5612 California SW):
Alki UCC church (6115 SW Hinds) is having a plant sale as part of WSCGSD:
And here’s another one of the fundraising sales – a multifamily sale at 4136 Beach Drive, raising money for the American Cancer Society:
That’s Amber Bennett, proprietor of Freshy’s Coffee at 2735 California SW, holding their entry for the “Best Sign” contest – one of two contests we’re having as part of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day today — “Best Sign” is for sellers; photograph your creative sign(s) and e-mail the photo after the sale to garagesale@westseattleblog.com; “Most Unusual Item” is for shoppers OR sellers – e-mail a photo and tell us which participating sale you bought/sold it at – same address, garagesale@westseattleblog.com. Prize for “Most Unusual Item” is a Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor and sale location today) card; prize for “Best Sign” is an Illusions (WSB sponsor) gift certificate; whichever contest gets the most entries will also have a second prize awarded, a gift certificate from the new Body Bar massage/skin care dayspa; winners will be announced Monday night. Back to Freshy’s for a sec – they’re doing the “Handmade Brigade” arts/crafts sale as well as yard-sale stuff – here’s a look down their sidewalk across from Hiawatha:
More group-sale updates coming up next. The sales continue till 3 pm; get your map here.
ADDED 10:29 AM: Those are photos from 7138 32nd SW, a sale raising money for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which fights childhood cancer. The family hosting the sale has a child fighting cancer, and is telling their story online here. (Click the address in that sentence to see where it’s at on the Google version of the WSCGSD map; get the printable map here.) ORIGINAL UPDATE: Another round of photos is headed this way – first some anecdotal observations, as the WSB team member who’s not on photo patrol took a quick side trip down the hill to the store – saw lots of folks browsing the sales in the Gatewood/Upper Fauntleroy area – and the sky’s getting lighter all the time! P.S. If you just can’t find a preprinted map (we know our official locations still have some, we checked this morning), we’ve also put a few out in a box by our sandwich board sign near WSB HQ – look for it @ California/Thistle.
Previously mentioned: Cross 5111 SW Hudson off the PDF (or preprinted) map – emergency cancellation of that sale. (We took it off the Google map, since that’s editable; the PDF isn’t.) Find the map links here.
Contest reminders: Everyone, shoppers and sellers, can enter “Most Unusual Item”; sellers can enter “Best Sign.” For entries into either one or both, send photos (and contact info, of course) after the sale ends today – garagesale@westseattleblog.com – Prizes are a Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) card for Best Sign, an Illusions (WSB sponsor) gift certificate for Best Sign, and whichever category gets the most entries will have a second winner, for a Body Bar gift certificate. We’ll announce the winners here and at West Seattle Blog on Monday night, so get your pix in by 3 pm Monday!
More updates as West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day approaches (9 am-3 pm tomorrow): Just before their second night of donation-accepting ended at 8 pm tonight, we stopped to see the Pigeon Point Neighborhood reps at Cooper Elementary (which benefits from their sale) …as you can see above, quite a haul. Also a possible candidate for the Most Unusual Item contest (can you guess what it is? PP Council prez Pete Spalding showed it off):
If you’re going to Pigeon Point, the North Delridge Neighborhood Council sale raising money for Cottage Grove Park play equipment is a stone’s throw away at 2512 SW Genesee. Here’s one of the items they hope to buy for the neighborhood’s littlest kids to play on:
