10 days till West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 30, 2008

Today we are in the midst of packet-mania. 100 packets should be in the mail to participants by day’s end; the other 50 or so (we still haven’t gotten to the final count; also there are a few people who will get a note from us about payment as it seems PayPal didn’t work for them – fixing that for next year!) will be mailed out tomorrow. Plus the team member who’s not working on packets is out getting even more flyers/posters distributed. Look for us at the Sustainable West Seattle Festival this Sunday (10 am-3 pm, Wells Fargo parking lot in The Junction) to answer your questions about WSCGSD (which at its heart is a recycling event, after all!).

Today’s other note: Hotwire Coffee is donating $20 coffee cards as prizes for the fun little contests we’re going to have. One is “Best Sign”; the second is “Most Unusual Item” – we’re going to open that to buyers as well as sellers. Stay tuned ..

11 days till West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 29, 2008

Some updates:

*We’re putting together the packets to mail to participants. In response to some of the feedback from previous years, we’re including two “official participant” signs in each packet, three for the block/group/business sales. We’ve printed them on fairly heavy stock, light blue, 8 1/2 x 11, and they proclaim your sale an OFFICIAL PARTICIPANT! Maybe you’ll want to use one at your main table and one on a neighborhood sign, up to you! We’re also including a copy of the 8 1/2 x 11 version of the official WSCGSD poster in hopes you will consider putting it up at work or even on a utility pole near you.

We hope no one will have to cancel, but if you do, we can take you off the map as late as this Friday, though we can’t refund your fee. Please call us at 206/293-6302 if you need to make this change (or if you have any questions or concerns about WSCGSD)

We have finalized the list of where maps will be available May 8-9-10, in addition to easy downloads here so you can print yours out at home or work (and if you’re having a sale, consider printing out a couple for the inevitable person or two who might wander over and be unaware of the other 139+ sales). In Admiral, at the West Seattle Library Branch; on Alki, at Alki Community Center; on Delridge, at the Delridge Library and Cafe Rozella; in Fauntleroy, at the Fauntleroy YMCA; in The Junction, at the Senior Center, Hotwire Coffee, the West Seattle Family YMCA and Capers; in Westwood, at Southwest Library; between Admiral and Alaska Junctions, the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce.

Promotional lessons along the way

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 28, 2008

-Don’t leave magic-marker-lettered posters on sandwich boards in the rain. We had two of them (recycling unused registration posters by making interim posters to put in a couple key spots on Sunday) that looked like runny mascara by the time we rescued them at day’s end. Today, we’re printing the official ones.

-Some publications with classified ads (based outside WS, but we do need to let the rest of the world know about WSCGSD) don’t seem to get the concept of a “Community Garage Sale Day” and insist on charging commercial rates. Ouch. On one hand, they’re probably thinking there are 140-plus sales that would be placing individual ads if not for the big coordinated campaign. On the other hand, we suspect a lot of folks wouldn’t be having sales at all if not for the community aspect, and might enjoy it enough to have ‘independent’ sales in the future.

-Writing the official “press release” within a day or so. Since we spent a quarter-century working in “conventional media,” we’re hoping we can write it cleverly enough to get more attention for West Seattle and YOUR SALES! Stay tuned …

Semifinal count: 143 sales! Here’s what’s happening now

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 27, 2008

After the Saturday mail arrived, we had 143 sales total, about 85% of them registered online. Sellers and shoppers alike may wonder what happens now:

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 10, 2008PUBLICITY, PROMOTION, ADVERTISING. Now the big push is to make sure that (A) everyone in West Seattle knows May 10 is Community Garage Sale Day with 140+ sales, and that (B) prospective shoppers in other areas (including the rest of King County, south Snohomish and north Pierce counties, and our close-by-ferry friends in Kitsap County) know it too, so that shoppers will flock to WS that day. The registration fees for WSCGSD (which we reduced from last year’s levels) are being plowed right back into promotion and printing, and we’re working to get the biggest bang for your bucks (the advertising will start THIS WEEK in weekly newspapers such as the Herald, Little Nickel, and a variety of community papers around the region – plus myriad online ad/event listings – we want to start awareness now, not just when The Big Day is a few days away). We also will be sending 8 1/2 x 11 copies of the official poster to sellers in their postal-mail packets, for posting anywhere you might see fit – your bulletin board at a workplace outside (or in) WS? Or?

SPEAKING OF PRINTING: We are putting together those packets to go out to our 140+ sellers by midweek, including a basic info-sheet, your official participant sign to display at your sale, the aforementioned mini-poster, and info from Northwest Center on how to donate any leftovers you have, IF you choose to. (See the “About NW Center and Your Unsold Stuff” page for more on how this is working for ’08.) Our goal is to get these in the mail by end-of-day Wednesday. If you don’t get yours by Saturday 5/3, please call us (206/293-6302).

CONTEST PLANS AND INFO-SHARING ABOUT SALES: While we would be silly to ignore our main website, West Seattle Blog, as a major place to promote West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, this website (westseattlegaragesale.com) will be the main detailed info source for people getting ready to shop and sell on May 10th. So please check in daily for announcements, including details on the “Best Sign” and “Most Unusual Item” contests, plus some advance hints about the sales themselves (where the group/block sales will be, for example, and other interesting details we glean from the map ad info that sellers submitted).

THE MAPS: As previously promised, they will be available no later than the morning of May 8 here at westseattlegaragesale.com and at more than half a dozen locations around West Seattle — to be listed here shortly, though we encourage you to print out your own copy at home or work if you can. The maps will include the locations and the “ad” info submitted by each participating sale as part of the registration process.

Registration is closed – now it’s time to talk Garage Sale Day!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 26, 2008

We won’t have a final count till Monday’s mail rolls in (figuring that any forms postal-mailed on Friday may not make it in till then), but we know the number of sales registered for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day on May 10 has passed 140 — this is going to be a blast! Registration IS closed; the online form is deactivated, and mail-in forms would have had to be postmarked Friday. Now it’s time to start shouting the news all around Puget Sound — we’ve already got a variety of announcements out but more to come — whether you’re a shopper or seller, how about you invite friends/relatives from other areas to come to West Seattle and have a blast garage-saling on May 10? Maps will be available online and at designated pickup spots (we will post the list over the weekend) May 8. And we’re now assembling packets for participants – those will go out in postal mail within a few days. More WSCGSD news later today!

P.S. If you want to get in the sale mood, the St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church 2-day rummage sale continues 9 am-3 pm today (and next Fri-Sat too).

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 10, 2008Last day to register for the 4th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day! We are thrilled to have made it into triple digits – thanks to everyone for deciding to be part of it. We also found out today that May 10 happens to be the date for one of our favorite donation events — the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive — put out a bag of nonperishable food for your mailperson to pick up. We encourage all WSCGSD participants (and everyone else!) to participate. The city also has announced May 10 is Seattle Walks Day … we start work on the map tomorrow night, so we won’t know till then, but we’re guessing there will be some places you can walk from sale to sale! QUICK LINKS ONE LAST TIME: Online registration form here, downloadable mail-in form here, list of locations to pick up a preprinted registration form here.

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 24, 2008

Our 100th registration just came in! You can still sign up your sale as long as you do it by tomorrow night. (P.S. We know some people have had trouble with the PayPal payment method – which takes major credit cards, you don’t have to be a PP member – so we’ll be contacting you for other options.) Closing in on 100 sales – plus, surprise publicity

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 24, 2008

We passed 95 registrations on Wednesday; looks like we’ll hit triple digits before we close registration on Friday night and get busy sending out infopackets, making the map, and continuing to plot more places to get citywide/regional publicity (plus printing new West Seattle flyers). One happy promotion surprise today — the scrolling red-lit sign for West Seattle Motors on Fauntleroy mentioned something like “support the West Seattle Garage Sale” — we did a double-take while driving by, not a safe thing to do but what a happy surprise, since we don’t know the folks who run that business.

80 sales for WSCGSD ’08, and still growing!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 22, 2008

Another milestone. That’s an incredible number already, but we’re secretly (ok, not so secretly since we posted it here) hoping to hit 100 before registration closes this Friday night – think of how great that’ll sound in the promotion! We’ve already posted more than a dozen ads in on- and offline publications that are read citywide (and beyond), by the way. Go, garage salers, go!!!!

Wondering where we’re promoting WSCGSD?

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 15, 2008

We promised the fine folks of Megawatt that we would not just be caretakers of the tradition they started in 2005, but would also do our best to find ways to grow it and expand awareness. A big part of that, of course, is promotion — what are we doing to let people know about registration, what are we doing to let people know about the sale itself — and we thought you might be interested. So far, within West Seattle, promotion has included more than 100 posters big and small, and hundreds of mail-in forms distributed to the locations listed here; we also of course have posted about WSCGSD repeatedly on our main site, West Seattle Blog, and have asked local churches and neighborhood groups to please get word out via their bulletins and mailing lists — we still have more groups to contact for this request (so if you’re reading this and you have a list that you wouldn’t mind using to send out a WSCGSD announcement, would you kindly e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com? thanks!) … And that’s just the beginning: Read the rest of this entry »

Registration Day 2: Off to a great start; updated NW Center info

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 11, 2008

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 10, 2008One day into registration (deadline April 25) and as of first thing this morning, we have 14 sales already! (Remember, this isn’t one big sale, it’s dozens of them all over West Seattle on the same time, same day, with one map listing all the locations plus the 10-word-or-less ad you give us when you sign up.)

First, the registration basics again:
We’ve cut the fees from previous years — they cover the organizational costs including as many ways as we can find to promote and advertise The Big Day! (No worries, we’re hunting down the free ways, too!) Plus maps, posters, etc.
$12/individual sale, $20/business/organization/school, $30/block sale (three or more residences)

Go here for online registration and payment (you will be sent to a PayPal page after you fill out the registration form; you can use a credit card or, if you have one, PayPal account)
or
Go here to download a form you can mail in to register
or
Go here to see the list of local businesses where you can pick up a mail-in form

We also have updated information this morning from Northwest Center regarding options for donating your leftover items. West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is partnering with Northwest Center again this year and happy to announce that if you want to donate items — WSCGSD participants donated 7 tons last year! — the Junction drop-off site will be open till 6:30 pm Saturday, 9 am-5 pm Sunday, or you can schedule a later pickup by using NW Center’s new site. Read all about it here.

Let the sale registrations begin!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 10, 2008

Our first registrations are in! We’ve also uploaded the printable form in case you want to print and fill it out and mail it in (deadline for us to receive it is April 25, please don’t wait till the last minute). So here are the important links:

Easy, simple, quick: Go here for online registration and payment

Rather mail it in? Download printable form to fill out and send with check

*Remember to have your 10-word (or less) ad ready when you register – this is how your sale will be described on the printable and downloadable map that will be available a few days before The Big Day.

(If you are new to the area or hadn’t heard of this before – we’ve had the question once today already – this is NOT one big sale at one location; this is dozens of sales (hey, hundreds if that many people sign up – it’s been more than 100 the past few years) all over West Seattle, on the same day, as a fun event to build community and draw visitors from elsewhere.)
