And the 2008 winners are …

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 12, 2008

duckdecoys.jpg

As you might recall, for our first year as organizers of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day (the 4th-annual edition was this past Saturday), we added a couple contests to the mix, asking entrants to e-mail us photo entries by mid-afternoon today. That big bag of duck decoys shown above is the “Most Unusual Item” winner (open to shoppers as well as sellers) — Pam (who writes Nerd’s Eye View) reports she found it at the alley sale near 37th/Holden. Pam gets a Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) card. Meanwhile, we promised two prizes in the contest with the most entries, and that was “Best Sign” — our winners are:

bestsigncheryl.jpg

Cheryl gets the Illusions Hair Design (WSB sponsor) gift certificate for that sign promoting the sale that raised money for her upcoming participation in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk (Sept. 12-14; her fundraising page is here; you’ll recall the 3-Day came thru West Seattle last year – WSB coverage here). And the other “Best Sign” winner:

valbestsign.jpg

That’s Val, who proudly reports about her sign, “Please note: all materials used were recycled from a party a couple of years ago, nothing was purchased!” Val gets a gift certificate from the new Body Bar dayspa. And we have one more bonus prize:

ashleywinstoo.jpg

Ashley, who joined other sellers in the Hotwire courtyard, was the only person to enter BOTH contests; we have a Hotwire coffee card for her too. The photo shows her beautifully lettered sign (her candidate for “Most Unusual Item” was betta-fish tanks she offered for sale). Congratulations to all (we’ll e-mail the winners to make arrangements for delivering prizes); thanks to Hotwire, Illusions, and Body Bar for donating the prizes; thanks to everyone who was part of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day; stand by for an online survey we’ll be setting up within a few days, and mark your calendar for the 5th annual WSCGSD on May 9, 2009!

A sale worth checking out next Friday-Saturday

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 12, 2008

Here’s the announcement:

Yard Sale Fundraiser
Youth Group Mission Trip to Mexico
May 16 & 17th 10 am-5 pm
42nd & Genesee

Tons of quality items, old and new – furniture, kitchen kitsch, kids stuff,
household items.

Proceeds go to support a group of teenagers from West Seattle Christian Church who
will be traveling to sunny Mexico this summer – but not to relax on the beach – no
these troopers will be driving the long journey down to Tijuana, Mexico to build a
house for a needy family.

Most teens are planning for their summer break right about now – Horse Camp, Space
Camp, Gymnastics Camp, Theater Camp, or perhaps a family trip to Disneyland or
Hawaii, these kids have decided to sacrifice comfort for an opportunity to give
back, to serve a family that they haven’t even met yet, in the heat of July. Part
of the experience is for these kids to pay their own way – approx. $950.00 This
will truly be a life-changing experience for these kids.

Thanks for a great day! Plus, if you’re donating leftovers …

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 10, 2008

The 4th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is in the rear-view mirror – and so far sounds like a pretty good time was had by all (or at least, most!). We’ve got an open thread for comments over at West Seattle Blog. Meantime, if you are a seller with leftover items to donate, please refer to the materials that came in your postal-mail packet for instructions on how to book a pickup with Northwest Center – or remember, their donation location in The Junction (northeast corner of 44th/Edmunds, next to the WaMu drive-thru) is open till 6:30 tonight!

7th report: More stops; 1 hour to go

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 10, 2008

christmasatskylark.jpg

“Christmas at Skylark” (3803 Delridge), as dubbed by Patrick the Sales Guy, who has been making most of the photography rounds today. However, in the past hour, your editor here and Junior Member of the Team broke away from WSB HQ to see what’s up. Dropped by a couple sales incognito, west of California, north of The Junction; bought strawberry lemonade from the kids at 47th/Dakota, wandered into an alley sale a few blocks east and got the unsolicited proclamation from the saleholder that “All the good stuff’s gone; it’s been a busy morning.” Well, not ALL the good stuff; Junior Member was furious we wouldn’t let him spend $5 on a big hulking scanner. Meantime, back at the sales – here’s the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle sale at 5637 42nd SW:

kiwanissale.jpg

Along Fauntleroy (5962), two pix from the PB&J Textiles sale:

dogshirtpbj.jpg

pbjwide.jpg

We drove through The Junction and noted group sale sites in the vicinity were still jumping, as were Junction businesses (megaline outside Bakery Nouveau, even at 1:30 pm). There’s still an hour to shop; get a map here if you need it.

South of The Junction, there’s a group sale (like Hotwire & Freshy’s, both shown earlier) at C and P Coffee (5612 California SW):

5th update: Don’t forget the contests!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 10, 2008

ambersign.jpg

That’s Amber Bennett, proprietor of Freshy’s Coffee at 2735 California SW, holding their entry for the “Best Sign” contest – one of two contests we’re having as part of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day today — “Best Sign” is for sellers; photograph your creative sign(s) and e-mail the photo after the sale to garagesale@westseattleblog.com; “Most Unusual Item” is for shoppers OR sellers – e-mail a photo and tell us which participating sale you bought/sold it at – same address, garagesale@westseattleblog.com. Prize for “Most Unusual Item” is a Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor and sale location today) card; prize for “Best Sign” is an Illusions (WSB sponsor) gift certificate; whichever contest gets the most entries will also have a second prize awarded, a gift certificate from the new Body Bar massage/skin care dayspa; winners will be announced Monday night. Back to Freshy’s for a sec – they’re doing the “Handmade Brigade” arts/crafts sale as well as yard-sale stuff – here’s a look down their sidewalk across from Hiawatha:

4th update: West Seattle Blog Forum Community sale

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 10, 2008

ginajan.jpg

That’s Gina (left) and JanS from the WSB Forum Community, at their sale @ 2655 45th SW (near Lafayette). Part of the sale is raising $ for Jan, a longtime West Seattle Blog reader/contributor/participant who’ll be out of work a while after hip-replacement surgery this week – some items are offered at whatever you’re willing to pay as a free-will donation; read more about this sale in this thread on the forum. (More updates to come; sales continue till 3 pm; get your map here.)

3rd update: Shoppers galore; assorted info

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 10, 2008

lemonadestand.jpg

lemonadecloseup.jpg

ADDED 10:29 AM: Those are photos from 7138 32nd SW, a sale raising money for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which fights childhood cancer. The family hosting the sale has a child fighting cancer, and is telling their story online here. (Click the address in that sentence to see where it’s at on the Google version of the WSCGSD map; get the printable map here.) ORIGINAL UPDATE: Another round of photos is headed this way – first some anecdotal observations, as the WSB team member who’s not on photo patrol took a quick side trip down the hill to the store – saw lots of folks browsing the sales in the Gatewood/Upper Fauntleroy area – and the sky’s getting lighter all the time! P.S. If you just can’t find a preprinted map (we know our official locations still have some, we checked this morning), we’ve also put a few out in a box by our sandwich board sign near WSB HQ – look for it @ California/Thistle.

Next — after stopping at the Community School of West Seattle megasale (see previous post), we hopped a couple blocks over to 9211 21st SW, where the sale’s in the back yard:

WSCGSD is here! First update – changes/additions

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 10, 2008

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 10, 2008Previously mentioned: Cross 5111 SW Hudson off the PDF (or preprinted) map – emergency cancellation of that sale. (We took it off the Google map, since that’s editable; the PDF isn’t.) Find the map links here.

Fundraiser additions: The sale at 4542 41st SW is raising money for the Junction Neighborhood Organization (JuNO) to apply to become an official nonprofit (costs $300) (JuNO’s next meeting on Tuesday, by the way, focuses on all that Junction development) … The WSB Forum Community sale at 2655 45th SW will include fundraising for longtime WSB’er JanS, who will be unable to work for a while after hip-replacement surgery this week.

Contest reminders: Everyone, shoppers and sellers, can enter “Most Unusual Item”; sellers can enter “Best Sign.” For entries into either one or both, send photos (and contact info, of course) after the sale ends today – garagesale@westseattleblog.com – Prizes are a Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) card for Best Sign, an Illusions (WSB sponsor) gift certificate for Best Sign, and whichever category gets the most entries will have a second winner, for a Body Bar gift certificate. We’ll announce the winners here and at West Seattle Blog on Monday night, so get your pix in by 3 pm Monday!

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day eve: The biggies

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 9, 2008

(crossposted at WSB)

pigeonpointwide.jpg

More updates as West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day approaches (9 am-3 pm tomorrow): Just before their second night of donation-accepting ended at 8 pm tonight, we stopped to see the Pigeon Point Neighborhood reps at Cooper Elementary (which benefits from their sale) …as you can see above, quite a haul. Also a possible candidate for the Most Unusual Item contest (can you guess what it is? PP Council prez Pete Spalding showed it off):

dscn4731.jpg

If you’re going to Pigeon Point, the North Delridge Neighborhood Council sale raising money for Cottage Grove Park play equipment is a stone’s throw away at 2512 SW Genesee. Here’s one of the items they hope to buy for the neighborhood’s littlest kids to play on:

cottagegrove.jpg

Other neighborhood/block/business/group sales: The Community School of West Seattle, 9450 22nd SW, with more than 100 families participating – this was the first sale to sign up this year! … Block/multifamily sales include 8818 18th SW, 4115 32nd SW, 4136 Beach Drive, 6701 21st SW, SW Dakota between 46th and 47th, 3260 42nd SW, 5406 36th SW. Three coffeehouses on California SW have multi-participant sales: Hotwire (WSB sponsor) at 4410 California, C and P at 5612 California, and Freshy’s at 2735 California … Other businesses with sales include Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) at 2210 California, Skylark at 3803 Delridge, PB&J Textiles at 5962 Fauntleroy, Westside Glassworks at 1904 SW Dawson, And while we don’t know how big their sale will be, we were excited that our first West Seattle Neighborhood Garage Sale Day sign sighting — a sign not put up by us, anyway — was on a utility pole very close to WSB HQ!

Announcing … THE MAP!!!! (Printable version + interactive version)

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 8, 2008

*NOTE IF YOU COME HERE FROM GOOGLE AND IT’S 2009 – THIS IS ABOUT THE 2008 MAP, NOT THE 2009 MAP – GO TO THE HOME PAGE MONDAY 5/4 OR LATER FOR THE ACTUAL MAP – THANK YOU*

OK, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. First:

Shoppers: Please do not contact sellers before 9 am Saturday. Thank you!

Sellers: PLEASE review the map at your earliest convenience. We have checked and doublechecked and triplechecked our lists of online and by-mail registrants and are very hopeful that (a) no one was left off and (b) none of the few on-time cancellations are still on the map. If either type of error happened, we apologize and here’s the semi-good news – That’s what websites are for. We prominently wrote on the cover page of the printed map, IF YOU HAVE COMPUTER ACCESS, CHECK WESTSEATTLEGARAGESALE.COM FOR UPDATES, so if we made a mistake, we can correct it here. One update so far: We did get a late emergency cancellation; please cross 5111 SW Hudson off the PDF and preprinted map versions. (We have taken it off the Google map.)

Now, THE MAP, two versions:
PDF 8-page download:
This is the same version we have printed and distributed to pickup locations (listed on this page). If you have access to a printer, please print your own copy here, so there are enough preprinted maps for people without computer/printer access. If you are a seller, consider printing a few extras to have on hand for shoppers who turn up Saturday and don’t realize it’s WSCGSD.

Clickable Google Map for your online exploration:
This one doesn’t print out so well, but it can’t be beat for online viewing, clicking on sale sites, zooming in on certain neighborhoods much more closely than we could do with the printed version, maybe even calculating directions to your favorites. You can navigate it two ways: Click on a spot on the map to bring up a “balloon” with its exact address and the “ad.” Or, using the list of addresses on the side of the page, click on an address and it will take you to that spot on the map.

We are adding all this information to the “How to Get the Garage Sale Day Map” page on this site, as well (click to it any time from the navigation bar beneath the page header). If you have any questions or problems related to anything about West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, please call us at 206/293-6302, or e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com — Once it’s all said and done, we will be soliciting feedback for how to make next year even better, too; this is our first year organizing it, so definitely a learning process, even with the great basic template Megawatt previously had going.

Last mention – remember the contests – “Most Unusual Item” (shoppers and sellers can enter; send a photo after the sale ends 3 pm Saturday, tell us where you bought or sold it) gets the $40 Hotwire Coffee card, “Best Sign” gets the Illusions Hair Design certificate (sitting here in a beautifully ribboned gift box already) – send us a photo of your sign. We’ll announce the winners Monday night.

Keep checking back – more to come including more of the sale highlights, now that the map is public, plus on Saturday we will have continuous coverage of the events (photos, text, video) here and at West Seattle Blog.88

The maps are almost in circulation

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 7, 2008

Printing of the first round (1,000) concluded this afternoon. We’ve distributed a couple batches so pickup spots will have them first thing in the morning – they don’t all open early, though – and tonight Patrick the Sales Guy is going to hand them out at the Southwest District Council meeting which he’ll be staffing for West Seattle Blog – that’s a couple dozen people who get a sneak peek. Your editor here hopes to post the map shortly after midnight tonight, in case you really just can’t wait to see who’s selling what where. There will be two versions — the PDF of the eight pages as printed (four double-sided copies), and the clickable Google map, so you can crossreference addresses and locations more easily while exploring online. We also have had one last-minute cancellation; as previously stated, 5/2 was the deadline to get off the map, but since we have this website, we will post the address here when the map goes up, in hopes it saves a few people from going by and discovering “no sale.”

3 days and counting – 3 updates!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 7, 2008

*The maps have gone to the printer! Actually, the copier. The format is four double-sided sheets, stapled, with three “region” maps/lists — north of SW Brandon, between SW Brandon and SW Roxbury, and south of SW Roxbury. If you can print your own from this site – we will have the PDF file posted for download as well as a clickable version that you can use to browse the sale information online ahead of time – it’ll be a big help. We are printing 1,000 for starters, certainly ready and willing to print more, but the more people who print their own, the more that leaves for the noncomputer-connected folks. The list of pickup spots (starting tomorrow morning, which is also when we’ll post the map links here and on West Seattle Blog) is on this page.

*The prizes are confirmed! Two West Seattle Blog sponsors have stepped up – Hotwire Coffee with a $40 coffee card, Illusions Hair Design with a haircut. Any preferences which contest gets which prize? Leave a comment! The contests are: Most Unusual Item (open to shoppers and sellers), Best Sign (open to sellers). Send photos by Monday morning to garagesale@westseattleblog.com – winners will be announced Monday night.

*Sellers: In addition to the Northwest Center opportunities for donating leftover items via pickup or dropoff, we have one more option for handling some leftovers – as part of the disaster preparedness campaign we’re helping with, local organizers have put together a list of items needed for neighborhood kits, and are hoping that anyone who finds themselves with these items left over after Garage Sale Day can donate them. We will publish the list in a separate post later today, just wanted to get you thinking about it.

Countdown continues: Miscellaneous preparations …

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 6, 2008

Notes in no particular order, from your West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day headquarters:
-Wanted to print the map in color but that would be about $2,000, they tell us. Darn.
-Deciding whether dot icons or pushpin icons look better on the map, especially considering the black/white factor.
-For all the ads we’ve placed and announcements we’ve sent out, the unexpected mentions are happy surprises – Still tickled with the West Seattle Motors scrolling sign on Fauntleroy; also got a mention today from the AM 1090 “green” blog.
-Lot of moving sales on the list. Even one “leaving country” sale!
-Remember that if you have any questions/concerns, you are welcome to call us, 206/293-6302.
-Two-thirds of Team WSB is out with more flyers right now … finally time for utility poles too … didn’t want to do that too soon for risk of early littering. We will be on flyer cleanup patrol starting Sunday, don’t worry.
-Forecast looks a little iffy but we know how tough it is to forecast accurately around here so we’re not going to even fret about it till Friday … if then. THINK SUN!!!!

4 days to go in the countdown; plus, the final sale count is in

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 6, 2008

The final count of 2008 West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day participants appears to be 144 — we have already doublechecked, and will of course be triplechecking before we start printing later today, but we’re pretty confident that’s the grand total — a new WSCGSD record, in year 4! Still to come later today, that mass e-mail we’ve been promising, plus a final “news release” to major citywide media (separate from the “events announcements” that we’ve long since sent in, plus all the ads we’ve placed). Reminder, maps are available starting Thursday, here on this site, on our main site West Seattle Blog, and also at these 11 locations around West Seattle (click each link for more info on their location if you need it):

Alki Community Center

Admiral (West Seattle) Library branch
Cafe Rozella
Capers
Delridge Library
Fauntleroy YMCA
Hotwire Coffee
Senior Center of West Seattle

5 days till Sale Day, 3 days till Map Day …

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 5, 2008

Still working on The Map. Favorite sale ‘ad’ so far this map-creation session — “Come buy stuff from packrats who are trying to reform.” Meantime, we had a GREAT time at the Sustainable West Seattle Festival — check out our coverage at West Seattle Blog — we handed out dozens of mini-info-sheets about West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, answered lots of questions (including one from a Shoreline woman who wanted to know what it would take to organize something like this for her community), met many fab people. We plan the same kind of before/during/after coverage for WSCGSD — so watch out, we might turn up at your sale, cameras in tow! Also for sellers: The group e-mail is likely to go out late Monday or early Tuesday and it will contain a special request … more on that later.

Sustainable West Seattle Festival today; meantime, WSCGSD map work continues

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 4, 2008

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 10, 2008The West Seattle Blog team has a table at today’s first-ever Sustainable West Seattle Festival in The Junction, so we can promote West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day — which, after all, is a unique form of one-on-one recycling, in a way. Before and after, we’re continuing work on The Map. Since every participant was asked to submit an ad/listing, we’re learning more about the sales as we go — there are nonprofit benefits, such as the Pigeon Point Council sale raising money for Cooper Elementary, the North Delridge Neighborhood Council raising money for tot play equipment at Cottage Grove Park, the Community School of West Seattle having its own ginormous sale, the Log House Museum, Kiwanis Club of West Seattle, a sale raising money for the childhood-cancer organization Alex’s Lemonade Stand, one benefiting the Breast Cancer 3-Day, one benefiting Homeward Pet, a sale at Alki UCC, donations for Furry Faces Foundation to get a place in the courtyard at Hotwire … We’ll share more sale tidbits as we go through the rest of the listings – this is just from the first half!

1 week and counting: Things are getting exciting

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 3, 2008

About two dozen of our 140-plus registrations came in via postal mail. We’re typing them into the computer right now for the map and listings … my favorite “ad” so far boldly begins with “Don’t miss this stop!” Close second is one that promises “artist oddities.” Keep checking here for more progress reports; since we’ve never done this before, documenting the process is fun in its own way. New wrinkle – we are watching the extended forecast — next Saturday better not be anything like today … very hard to do long-range forecasting in this area, as we learned from the fine TV meteorologists with whom we worked at channels 13 and 4, but the current National Weather Service writeup does hint at a little “ridge” (good) building toward week’s end … here’s hoping!

Sudden change in plan? Cancellation deadline is today

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 2, 2008

We’ve had a couple people drop out because of sudden travel plans – if you need to cancel, as stated in the registration process, tonight is the deadline for you to cancel and not be on the map. After tonight, certainly it’s up to you whether to have your sale or not, but we won’t be able to take you off the map, which is in production so we can print a slew of copies to be available around town on Thursday. Just call 206/293-6302.

9 days till West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day: Where the sales are!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 1, 2008

No, we don’t have a sneak peek at the WSCGSD map. But after putting together the packets for mailing to our 145-plus participants, we can tell you something about the geography, and the business/school/group sites (block sale hints tomorrow):

GEOGRAPHY: All over West Seattle, from Sunset Avenue on the northernmost bluffs to Arbor Heights in the south, from Beach Drive in the west to Pigeon Point in the east, and lots inbetween.

BUSINESS/GROUP/SCHOOL SITES: The Community School of West Seattle, Log House Museum, North Delridge Neighborhood Council, Pigeon Point Council, Hotwire Coffee, Click! Design That Fits, PB&J Textiles, C and P Coffee, Freshy’s Coffee, Skylark, Westside Glassworks, Alki UCC church, Kiwanis Club of West Seattle, and WSB Forum Community members!

Tomorrow we’ll talk about the block sales and a couple of fundraisers that are planned.

P.S. We just added a page with map info – so you can easily access the list of locations to pick one up, and the map itself when it’s ready May 8. Find it any time from the navigation bar below the header.
