Thank you!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 13, 2017

Just a quick word of thanks, as we all continue recovering from a West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day that was far sunnier than we expected (among other attributes) … thanks for being part of it, thanks for sharing photos, updates, and thanks for taking the time to meet your neighbors from far and near who stopped by. Next year’s WSCGSD will be the second Saturday as usual, which means it’s May 12, 2018!

Book drive in conjunction with West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2017

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 11, 2017

Today we’re spotlighting the donation drives that have been organized in connection with West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day this year. First: A book drive to benefit schools:

One of the easiest ways to motivate students to read and learn is to have books with topics that kids are excited about reading and learning from! Your donated books will make a difference! Over the past three years, West Seattle schools received more than 5,000 books for motivating and exciting students as an important part of education.

We will donate religious-theme books to religious schools in West Seattle, and elderly books to Providence. We don’t want violent or sexual-themed books.

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is a tremendous source of books. We are asking people who have left-over books from their yard sale this May 13th (as well as anyone who has excess books), to please donate your books to West Seattle schools. And for those who donated in the past, Thank you!

You can drop off books at any of these locations through May 26th.

A. West Seattle schools (Monday thru Friday only):

1. Denny International Middle School, 2601 SW Kenyon St, 252-9000. Drop off at the front desk, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Attention: Librarian (Denny will take books all year.)

2. Sanislo Elementary, 1812 SW Myrtle St, 952-8320. Drop off at the front desk from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Attention:Kim

B. West Seattle Businesses:

1. We will have a truck marked with a large sign “Donate Books to West Seattle Schools” in the West Seattle Junction near the Northwest Center truck (off 44th SW between Alaska and Edmunds) from 2 to 6 PM on May 13th only.

Note: We will have 40 coupons good for up to 4 free Bowling Games at Roxbury Lanes for anyone who donates 20 or more hard-cover books.

2. Roxbury Bowling Lanes, 2823 SW Roxbury, 206-935-7400, from 11 AM to 7 PM. … Note: Roxbury Lanes, as part of its support for the Seattle community, will give a certificate good for 4 free bowling games for any book donation over 20 hardcover books.

3. Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, 4410 California Avenue SW … Note: Hotwire Coffee, as part of its support for the West Seattle community, will give a certificate good for $1 off any purchase at Hotwire to the first 25 people who drop off 10 or more hardcover books.

We want to thank Denny Principal Jeff Clark, Denny Librarian Jeff Treistman, and Dearborn Librarian Craig Seasholes (formerly at Sanislo Elem) for their efforts to distribute books to their students. For further info, call Mr. Potratz at 932-3007.

MAP DAY EVE! And other West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2017 updates

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 5, 2017

9:08 PM MAY 5th: It’s Friday night and tomorrow’s the second-biggest day of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day season – the day the map goes public! We’re in the final stages of working on it tonight so we’re expecting to have it ready and available around noon Saturday (May 6th) – watch for the announcement here and on our partner site West Seattle Blog, where the main WSCGSD page with the online map, and the downloadable/printable map and listings, will also be linked from our navigation bar/menu when it’s ready.

If you’re a seller, the “packet” is going out tonight. But this site is the main info hub – we’re also working on the AFTER THE SALE tab, with info from the local nonprofits who are interested in any leftovers you might have. But before we get that far ahead, everyone think SUNSHINE! for Saturday, May 13th. We know more than 300 sellers will be spending this weekend readying wares from crystal chandeliers to SCUBA gear to a “’60s Coke machine” to “nerdy gifts” to a “1962 Aloha trailer” to a surfboard, a sailboat, sleds …

9:36 AM SATURDAY: Still on track for the maps in the noon vicinity (or shortly thereafter)!

Another reminder about Stamp Out Hunger on West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 2, 2017

The second Saturday in May is not only West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – it’s also the coast-to-coast food drive headed up by US Postal Service letter carriers, Stamp Out Hunger, and that goes for this year’s big day – May 13th – too.

Every year we joyfully remind WSCGSD sellers and shoppers to put out their donations by their mailbox (or door if that’s how/where you get mail) before they get going for the day – many residences get special bags earlier in the week, courtesy of the letter carriers, but if you don’t, you can still set out your donation in a bag of your choice. We do it every year too, before we head out to photograph some of the sales for ongoing all-day coverage.

Meantime, WSCGSD is just 11 days away and you’ll find the maps and list of sales linked here (and on our parent site West Seattle Blog) on Saturday – we’re continuing to work on them right now!

May 13th is getting closer! Mapmaking in progress

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 2, 2017

310+ sales are on the map we’re busy making this week – still on target for our annual promise to launch it one week in advance, which means this Saturday, May 6th, one week before West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2017, which is 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 13th. As we doublechecked the listings, we took some fun notes about what people are mentioning in their listings, and we’ll continue rolling those out in previews. Just wanted to let you know everything’s moving along – if you’re a seller, hope your sale preps are going well! Any questions, e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com.
