Sale 83 – Alley sale between 37th/38th, Edmunds/Hudson

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 9, 2009

This photo came in as an entry for the “most creative sign” contest (actually they have four versions) but we’re sharing it as an early Garage Sale Day photo too:

Map note: Dot locations are not an exact science

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 9, 2009

Heard from Kerry at sale #182, that when you take a close look at the dot marking her sale, it’s not quite on the correct street (36th SW). We should note that the dot placement is definitely not an exact science – Google Maps doesn’t put the placemarker for certain addresses at the exact spot – so please follow the street names and numbers as well as the markers’ general guidane. Meantime, Kerry hopes to see you at 11027 36th SW: “Our house is at the south dead-end of 36th, right off 110th.”

P.S. Remember that as we mentioned earlier, we’ve invited sellers to post more info about their sales in the West Seattle Blog Forums’ Freebies, Deals, Sales section – and a few more have taken us up on that – see the listings here.

More updates … it’s Garage Sale Day eve!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 8, 2009

Check out the various notes just posted at WSB. And remember – send photos! Just in case we don’t make it to your sale (we’ll be out and about starting early, posting updates on this site and on WSB).

ADDED FRIDAY EVENING: We’ll be adding tidbits to this throughout the night – keep checking back. Here’s a site with a bit more on the Amigos de las Americas fundraising sale – proud dad of a daughter who’s going to Honduras because of the group.

CONTESTS: It was pointed out that we haven’t said a lot about the contests. Yikes! We have three — two for sellers, one for shoppers: Most creative sign, most unusual item sold, most unusual item bought. After the sale’s over, send us photos at garagesale@westseattleblog.com along with information on exactly which sale the sign/item is from, plus of course your contact info. We judge and will announce the winners – each of whom gets a gift certificate – we’re still finalizing the prize lineup but so far it looks like one Junction restaurant, one downtown restaurant, one Junction merchandise.

Yes, people really do come from outside the area

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 7, 2009

Last year we heard from folks who came all the way over the Cascades from Yakima. Tonight, just got a note from somebody who’s coming from Marysville. Anybody you know who’s interested in Yard Sale Paradise, have ’em come this way on Saturday – plenty of sales to go around for everyone! Don’t have your map yet? GO HERE!

Got more to say about your sale? Post it in the WSB Forum

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 7, 2009

We’re thinking it’ll be a great idea for next year to set up a separate discussion forum area where people can talk about sales – and even post that they’re looking for certain items – BEFORE West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day. In the meantime, we have something of a jerry-rigged system … you can go to the West Seattle Blog Forums and post about your sale, or about an item you’re seeking. Just be sure that after you create your post on the forums’ main page, you subsequently categorize it for the Freebies, Deals, Sales section. There are several posts in that section already, including one from somebody looking for a certain item – read them all here.

Two days till sale day!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 7, 2009

The “official participant” placard mailing may screech in today or tomorrow – if yours doesn’t come in tomorrow (Friday)’s mail, please call us at 206-293-6302 and we’ll drop one off at your house.

Also, if you have a preprinted map, please cross off one sale – #179 has to cancel. (May 1 was the deadline for getting off the printable map, but if anyone else has had to cancel at the last minute, please call us – same number as above – and we will take you off the online map.)

If there is anything extra you would like to say about your sale, you are welcome to post it in the Freebies, Deals, Sales section of the WSB Forums – a few people have done so already and we’ll be crosslinking their extra info here.

NEW VERSION OF PRINTABLE MAP – PLEASE PRINT THIS ONE

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 6, 2009

Seems a couple of the markers in the first map section (page 2) were cut off in the far west and far east, so we have fixed it and made a new map packet. All sales were in the listings – but the number markers for a few just weren’t showing – now they do show; PRINT THIS ONE (8 page PDF).

First coverage in other media – and unsolicited, to boot!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 5, 2009

Just happened onto this MyNorthwest.com story about West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day. Granted, besides plugging it on our main site West Seattle Blog, we’ve also advertised it all over the region – with paid ads on other neighborhood-news sites in Seattle neighborhoods, free classifieds on Craigslist and other sites, and some newspaper classifieds – so we’d HOPE a lot of folks had heard about it by now … but we are just now drafting the Official News Release geared for possible Saturday coverage (hmm, maybe a Saturday morning newscast might want to send somebody over to one of the big sale sites?), and glad to see it’s already gotten a writeup.

Update: Here’s the printable map

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 4, 2009

Here’s the official map – 8-page printable PDF. Same sales as you saw on the clickable Google Map mentioned in the previous post, but this time the listings are in order, and the map is broken into sections, as it was last year. Just five days to go, getting here fast! Sellers – we’re putting together the packets to mail out with your “official” sale sign card and a few other items of collateral – you’ll get them later this week. If you want to pick up a pre-printed map, by midday Tuesday we will have distributed hundreds of copies to these locations (first five are WSB sponsors):
Hotwire Coffee
Fauntleroy and West Seattle YMCA
Illusions Hair Design
Stor-More Self-Storage
Brunette Mix
Senior Center of West Seattle
Delridge and WS (Junction) Neighborhood Service Centers

First look at the 2009 West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day map – online-only version

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 3, 2009

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 9, 2009Caveat – this is the Google Map *online only, does-not-print-well* version. We gave out 200 copies of the printed version at today’s Sustainable West Seattle Festival, but are trying to tweak the map display a little before (a) printing more copies for distribution to local pickup spots tomorrow and (b) linking the PDF for you to download and print your own copy. That said, in case you have some time to spare tonight, we are offering you THIS version of the map in case you want an early look at whether there are sales near your house, sales with any particular items you’re looking for, etc. PLEASE – honor the fact that these sales are 9 am-3 pm next Saturday, and don’t contact anyone sooner – we made the map earlier this year (the previous four years, it was available just for a couple days ahead of the sale day) mostly just in hopes earlier availability would help shoppers plan better. Also note: While the sales are numbered, the list in the left margin of the map is NOT in order (the numbering was done north to south after entering all the addresses) – to navigate the map, use the scale on the left side of the window to zoom in and out, and when you see a sale number you want a closer look at, click the place marker (this is best done when zoomed in VERY closely, as the place markers have invisible edges beyond the circles) and it will open a “balloon” with the exact address and the short sale description. OR – look at the list in the left margin and when you see a sale you want to find, click the address line, and you will be taken to that spot on the map. Again, here’s the link to the Google Map online-only version. We will let you know tomorrow when we have the printable version ready – the sales have the same numbers, but otherwise the layout is very different, designed for use as a physical document.

200 map copies ready for Sustainable West Seattle Festival!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 2, 2009

We’ll have them at other locations on Monday – might tweak the map presentation a little bit – we have the sales numbered this year, by popular demand after numberlessness last year, at least. And by Monday morning, we’ll also have the file here for you to download, plus we’ll point you to the Google Map version if you would like to have a look at that, plot some routes, etc.

Unofficial final total number of sales: 183

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 2, 2009

As of right now – and the map is going down to the wire in hopes we’ll really have some printed by the Sustainable West Seattle Festival tomorrow – we may be looking for an all-night print shop at this rate – wish us luck. And start working on those signs – that’s one of our contest categories this year – although you have to send us a photo to enter – we will be roaming around reporting on some of the sales on May 9th but we won’t be able to get to all 183!

Mapmaking mania!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 1, 2009

On deadline to get The Map done – if you need to cancel your sale, please be sure you call THIS MORNING – otherwise it will be on the printed map, though we will make a note on the online version that it’s been canceled – we are getting the map to the printer this morning no matter what. Then, we start working on the packets to send participants – including the “official participant” signs – Make your own cool signs, though, because remember, that’s one of the contest categories – best sign, most unusual item (got any other suggestions? not too late to add a contest!) … May 9th is getting here fast!

10 days to go – West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day progress report

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 29, 2009

zprogressmap

The map gets built first in Google Maps before other work is done to turn it into the official guide. See all those markers? That’s what the peninsula looks like – before we were even HALF done inputting all the sales. Wow. Also interesting, reading all the sale listings as we drop them into the map – like this one:

NEWER, NICE items! Wife must part with stuff – not husband!

Glad to hear they’re staying together. Also noting some sellers are offering treats – and there are some unique items, like one sale offering a Toyota 4Runner.

P.S. Want to help distribute the official poster? It’s 11 x 17. Tack one up at your church, school, workplace (even if it’s not in West Seattle – we’re advertising this far and wide). Download it here.

Other notes of interest … there are at least two sales at ActivSpace (Harbor Ave just north of The Bridge) – Shotridge Studios and Riverhouse Creperie, which is offering free gelato if you “shop (there)” (on WSCGSD of course).

Northwest Center and anything you don’t sell

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 28, 2009

Once again this year, Northwest Center is partnering with West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day to help you de-clutter if you happen to have any sale merchandise left over. Here’s the plan this year, from Northwest Center:

What to do with after-garage-sale stuff? – Why not visit Northwest Center’s West Seattle Donation Drop Off? NWC will be extending hours on Saturday, May 9th until 6:30 pm.

“The Big Blue Truck” is located in the Junction at the corner of 44th Ave SW and SW Edmunds, across from Uptown Espresso in the Diamond Parking Lot. Regular hours are Friday – Sunday 9 am – 5 pm. For a listing of acceptable donations visit their website at www.bigbluetruck.org. Please bag and box your items for the attendant. If you are interested in scheduling a pickup for the next week after the sale, click on “schedule a pickup” to enter your information. You will be contacted to schedule.

If you’re among the 180-plus sellers signed up for WSCGSD, you’ll get more Northwest Center info in the packet we’ll be mailing you at week’s end.

Record-setting sale signups: Here’s who’s selling

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 27, 2009

We’ve listed the businesses, churches, nonprofits over at West Seattle Blog.

Sellers, note that we will send a packet at week’s end, so that you’ll get it at least several days before The Big Day – it will include your official participant placard/sign to add to your signage, display at your site, whatever you want to use it for, plus some info including Northwest Center donating tips.

If you need to cancel – Thursday is the latest we can get you off the preprinted map, because late Thursday/early Friday, we’ll be copying/printing it so we have copies ready to debut at the WSB table at the Sustainable West Seattle Festival in The Junction next Sunday.

Thanks to EVERYONE – we may wind up at or past 180 sales, which would be by far a WSCGSD record! In addition to working on the map right now, we’re also in the major marketing push – buying ads (including Google AdWords, so anybody searching for info on, for example, Seattle garage sales, will see an ad for WSCGSD), making event calendar listings, distributing another round of posters/flyers, etc.

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day record!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 25, 2009

We’re up to 155 registered sales with less than 24 hours left to sign up … that’s 10+ more than last year, the previous record. Too late to mail in a form but not too late to sign up online (see the tab above). Over the weekend we’ll start talking about what’s in store – as we prepare The Map, which will be available starting on Sunday 5/3 at the West Seattle Blog table at the Sustainable West Seattle Festival in The Junction (and online right after the festival ends that afternoon). Get ready to sell, and shop, a LOT!

137 sales signed up!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 23, 2009

With two days to go, looks like we’re likely to break the record (set last year – the final total wiggled a bit with a last-minute cancellation – let us know ASAP if you signed up and have to cancel! – but it was about 147) … Starting tomorrow we’ll spotlight some of the folks who are planning sales. Schools, nonprofits, you name it, and the Hotwire courtyard alone – while it counts as 1 on the map – has 25 participants so far!

50 sales registered already!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 8, 2009

Faster pace than last year – and we have a longer registration period this time!

Also new – we have confirmation that Northwest Center will partner with West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day again this year, just in case you have stuff left over – the dropoff location in The Junction will stay open longer on The Big Day (May 9), for starters. More to come.

Or, if you prefer to print out a form and mail it in with your check, here’s the form you can use to do that (don’t try to print out the online form linked above – its special configuration won’t work that way).

Special in-person discount on the first day of 2009 registration

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on March 22, 2009

WSB will have a table at the Gathering of Neighbors 4/4 at Chief Sealth High School and we thought it would be fun to offer discounted in-person registration for anyone and everyone who signs up with us in person during that event. So while the WSCGSD fees will be the same as last year for online and mail registration – $12 individual sale, $20 group/organization/school, $30 block sale – if you come sign up and pay in person at the Gathering, it’ll be $10/$15/$25.

More to come.

And the 2008 winners are …

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 12, 2008

duckdecoys.jpg

As you might recall, for our first year as organizers of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day (the 4th-annual edition was this past Saturday), we added a couple contests to the mix, asking entrants to e-mail us photo entries by mid-afternoon today. That big bag of duck decoys shown above is the “Most Unusual Item” winner (open to shoppers as well as sellers) — Pam (who writes Nerd’s Eye View) reports she found it at the alley sale near 37th/Holden. Pam gets a Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) card. Meanwhile, we promised two prizes in the contest with the most entries, and that was “Best Sign” — our winners are:

bestsigncheryl.jpg

Cheryl gets the Illusions Hair Design (WSB sponsor) gift certificate for that sign promoting the sale that raised money for her upcoming participation in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk (Sept. 12-14; her fundraising page is here; you’ll recall the 3-Day came thru West Seattle last year – WSB coverage here). And the other “Best Sign” winner:

valbestsign.jpg

That’s Val, who proudly reports about her sign, “Please note: all materials used were recycled from a party a couple of years ago, nothing was purchased!” Val gets a gift certificate from the new Body Bar dayspa. And we have one more bonus prize:

ashleywinstoo.jpg

Ashley, who joined other sellers in the Hotwire courtyard, was the only person to enter BOTH contests; we have a Hotwire coffee card for her too. The photo shows her beautifully lettered sign (her candidate for “Most Unusual Item” was betta-fish tanks she offered for sale). Congratulations to all (we’ll e-mail the winners to make arrangements for delivering prizes); thanks to Hotwire, Illusions, and Body Bar for donating the prizes; thanks to everyone who was part of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day; stand by for an online survey we’ll be setting up within a few days, and mark your calendar for the 5th annual WSCGSD on May 9, 2009!

Announcing … THE MAP!!!! (Printable version + interactive version)

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on May 8, 2008

*NOTE IF YOU COME HERE FROM GOOGLE AND IT’S 2009 – THIS IS ABOUT THE 2008 MAP, NOT THE 2009 MAP – GO TO THE HOME PAGE MONDAY 5/4 OR LATER FOR THE ACTUAL MAP – THANK YOU*

OK, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. First:

Shoppers: Please do not contact sellers before 9 am Saturday. Thank you!

Sellers: PLEASE review the map at your earliest convenience. We have checked and doublechecked and triplechecked our lists of online and by-mail registrants and are very hopeful that (a) no one was left off and (b) none of the few on-time cancellations are still on the map. If either type of error happened, we apologize and here’s the semi-good news – That’s what websites are for. We prominently wrote on the cover page of the printed map, IF YOU HAVE COMPUTER ACCESS, CHECK WESTSEATTLEGARAGESALE.COM FOR UPDATES, so if we made a mistake, we can correct it here. One update so far: We did get a late emergency cancellation; please cross 5111 SW Hudson off the PDF and preprinted map versions. (We have taken it off the Google map.)

Now, THE MAP, two versions:
PDF 8-page download:
This is the same version we have printed and distributed to pickup locations (listed on this page). If you have access to a printer, please print your own copy here, so there are enough preprinted maps for people without computer/printer access. If you are a seller, consider printing a few extras to have on hand for shoppers who turn up Saturday and don’t realize it’s WSCGSD.

Clickable Google Map for your online exploration:
This one doesn’t print out so well, but it can’t be beat for online viewing, clicking on sale sites, zooming in on certain neighborhoods much more closely than we could do with the printed version, maybe even calculating directions to your favorites. You can navigate it two ways: Click on a spot on the map to bring up a “balloon” with its exact address and the “ad.” Or, using the list of addresses on the side of the page, click on an address and it will take you to that spot on the map.

We are adding all this information to the “How to Get the Garage Sale Day Map” page on this site, as well (click to it any time from the navigation bar beneath the page header). If you have any questions or problems related to anything about West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, please call us at 206/293-6302, or e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com — Once it’s all said and done, we will be soliciting feedback for how to make next year even better, too; this is our first year organizing it, so definitely a learning process, even with the great basic template Megawatt previously had going.

Last mention – remember the contests – “Most Unusual Item” (shoppers and sellers can enter; send a photo after the sale ends 3 pm Saturday, tell us where you bought or sold it) gets the $40 Hotwire Coffee card, “Best Sign” gets the Illusions Hair Design certificate (sitting here in a beautifully ribboned gift box already) – send us a photo of your sign. We’ll announce the winners Monday night.

Keep checking back – more to come including more of the sale highlights, now that the map is public, plus on Saturday we will have continuous coverage of the events (photos, text, video) here and at West Seattle Blog.88

We encourage all WSCGSD participants (and everyone else!) to participate. Wondering where we’re promoting WSCGSD?

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 15, 2008

We promised the fine folks of Megawatt that we would not just be caretakers of the tradition they started in 2005, but would also do our best to find ways to grow it and expand awareness. A big part of that, of course, is promotion — what are we doing to let people know about registration, what are we doing to let people know about the sale itself — and we thought you might be interested. So far, within West Seattle, promotion has included more than 100 posters big and small, and hundreds of mail-in forms distributed to the locations listed here; we also of course have posted about WSCGSD repeatedly on our main site, West Seattle Blog, and have asked local churches and neighborhood groups to please get word out via their bulletins and mailing lists — we still have more groups to contact for this request (so if you’re reading this and you have a list that you wouldn’t mind using to send out a WSCGSD announcement, would you kindly e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com? thanks!) … And that’s just the beginning: Read the rest of this entry »

Registration Day 2: Off to a great start; updated NW Center info

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 11, 2008

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 10, 2008One day into registration (deadline April 25) and as of first thing this morning, we have 14 sales already! (Remember, this isn’t one big sale, it’s dozens of them all over West Seattle on the same time, same day, with one map listing all the locations plus the 10-word-or-less ad you give us when you sign up.)

First, the registration basics again:
We’ve cut the fees from previous years — they cover the organizational costs including as many ways as we can find to promote and advertise The Big Day! (No worries, we’re hunting down the free ways, too!) Plus maps, posters, etc.
$12/individual sale, $20/business/organization/school, $30/block sale (three or more residences)

Go here for online registration and payment (you will be sent to a PayPal page after you fill out the registration form; you can use a credit card or, if you have one, PayPal account)
or
Go here to download a form you can mail in to register
or
Go here to see the list of local businesses where you can pick up a mail-in form

We also have updated information this morning from Northwest Center regarding options for donating your leftover items. West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is partnering with Northwest Center again this year and happy to announce that if you want to donate items — WSCGSD participants donated 7 tons last year! — the Junction drop-off site will be open till 6:30 pm Saturday, 9 am-5 pm Sunday, or you can schedule a later pickup by using NW Center’s new site. Registration Day 1 is here – here’s what’s happening

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 10, 2008

Just in case you’re raring to go and checking this in the early moments of April 10:
Here it is – the first-ever online registration form for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day — click here to start.
By 10 o’clock this morning, we will also have a Word doc here that you can download and fill out if you prefer to mail in your registration.
Or, if you want to pick up an already-printed registration form to mail in, we will have them at the businesses listed below by early afternoon. (Idea: Pick one up while you’re enjoying the West Seattle Art Walk 6-9 pm tonight – several Art Walk participants will have registration forms.)
Registration is open today through April 25; we have to cut it off then so we can start working on the maps and finishing the promotion and making sure this is THE MOST AWESOME WSCGSD EVER!
Glad you’ll be part of it.

Two days till registration opens!

Posted by westseattlegaragesale on April 8, 2008

We’ll be making the rounds with posters and sign-up forms on Wednesday, and the link for online registration will go up here and at West Seattle Blog on Thursday. The fees will be $12/individual sale, $20/organization (including schools and businesses), $30/block sale. This gets you in on a ton of promotion and a couple of cool contests (best sign, most unusual sale item). Can’t wait!
