Shorewood Streets of Sales ahead on June 7th

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day seems to be the season-opener – since our big day on May 10th, we’ve already had the area’s longest-running event, in Greenwood, and now we’re looking ahead to June 7th in Shorewood. As announced:

The Shorewood Streets of garage sales is right around the corner on Saturday June 7th from 9 am-4 pm.

As usual the neighborhood will be filled with sales, deals and deal seekers. The different entrance points to the neighborhood will be lit up with large signs and balloons with maps available in boxes. For those more tech inclined we also have an online map that is live up the minute with sale locations. More people are joining in every day, we usually have around 50 sales!

Join us in Shorewood and support this 20+ year tradition! There is a reason the sale has keep strong for so long, great sellers and customers!

Yard Sale Bingo: ‘The Youngstown Crew’ shares their game

Late last night, continuing to get ready for today’s West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day (9 am-3 pm, find the maps here), we received this note:

Each year, we play “West Seattle Yard Sale Bingo” and people we meet love the bingo cards we make. I thought I’d send along photos of our yard sale bingo cards in case anyone else wants to print them and play along.

Five separate cards are attached. Items are repeated on different cards, so our rules are:

1. You may not mark an item on your bingo card unless someone else in the group sees the item to verify.

2. Only the first person to spot the item may mark it on their card.

3. Only one item per yard sale counts: for instance “martini glass” appears on two cards, but only the first person to call it gets to mark it, even if there is more than one martini glass at the yard sale.

Hours away! West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is almost here

We’ve been watching the forecast all day … and right now it’s looking dry. Might not be the brilliant sunshine of the past few West Seattle Community Garage Sale Days, but hey, with so much rain this year, just having it take a break until oh, say, Saturday evening, will be great.

One more reminder that you can find the maps here – note there have been a couple last-minute cancellations, still leaving us with 282 sales as of this writing, biggest WSCGSD yet! Remember you can search the online map (follow that link) by clicking the blue word “Search” near the top right, and then using the dropdown (which defaults to “name”) to choose “description,” entering your search term(s), and then looking for a list of sales alongside the map that have what you want!

Another option for donations during/after WSCGSD

The Shop ‘n’ Shop Thrift Shop below the Senior Center of West Seattle wants you to know:

During and after the West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, the West Seattle Senior Center’s Stop n Shop Thrift store will be taking donations of any unwanted and unsold garage sale merchandise during extended business hours of 10-7 pm. The Stop n Shop Thrift shop will have extra volunteers on staff to help you unload your unsold items so you don’t have to drag them back into your homes! All proceeds from donated items help to fund the Senior Center’s many wonderful programs and opportunities for our local seniors. Please consider us before you put all that unwanted stuff back into your garage. Just pull up out front or back, we’ll do all the rest. Thank you!

Out back would be the alley running south of Oregon between California and 42nd.

Stop by West Seattle High School (sale #69) on Saturday, sign up for WS 5K!

An extra reason to stop by the West Seattle High School fundraising sale on WS Community Garage Sale Day this Saturday (May 10th) – you can sign up for the West Seattle 5K, coming up Sunday, May 18th, 9 am on Alki, raising money for the WSHS PTSA to help the school. WSHS is at 3000 California SW.

One week to West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day! See the map here later today; book donation drive already under way

One week from now, hundreds will be selling, thousands will be shopping, from Duwamish Head to Brace Point to White Center to Highland Park, on the 10th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day. As promised, you’ll be able to see the map here later today – and it will include the sale numbers, so sellers can start telling everyone they know to come see them at sale # (etc.). We’re also e-mailing the “packets” to sellers this morning, with various info, and we’re post-office-bound with hard-copy packets for the handful of the sellers who requested that version. 

WSCGSD has also come to be a day of generosity, as sellers donate unsold/unwanted items to nonprofits, including longtime official WSCGSD partner Northwest Center and recently added partner WestSide Baby, among others. New this year, a book drive for local schools, spearheaded by Denny International Middle School – and book dropoffs are under way even now – here’s a message from Denny’s principal Jeff Clark:

<blockquote>Motivating and exciting students is an important part of education at Denny International Middle School and the other schools in West Seattle. One of the easiest ways to motivate students to read is to have books they are excited about reading. We are seeking donated books to help us to match each student to many appropriately-leveled high-interest books. Your book donation would help us with our efforts.

How You Can Help: You can drop off books at any of these locations:

1. We will have a truck marked Denny Middle School in the West Seattle Junction across from Junction True Value from 3 to 6 PM on May 10th.

2. Hotwire Coffee – 4410 California Avenue SE, any time during open hours thru May 18th . … Note: Hotwire Coffee, as part of its support for the West Seattle community, will give a certificate good for $1 off any purchase at Hotwire to the first 25 people who drop off 10 or more books.

Some books may be more suitable for older or younger readers. We plan to sort the donated books and find appropriate places for them, including local elementary schools, Chief Sealth International High School, and the West Seattle Senior Center.

8 days to go! Looks like we have 280+ sales for the 10th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day

Mapmaking is in its final stages, after we proofread all 280+ listings. Starting Friday (as in, hours from now) we will roll out some final info – from how you can participate in donation drives on West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, to collection drives post-sale, to the info packets that we’ll send to participants. It’s all about logistics now – including your help in making sure friends and family know about it, so they can come wander West Seattle’s miles of sales on Saturday, May 10th. Counting down to West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2014! And a message for sellers

Registration is closed and it looks like we’ll have about 280 sales for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2014 – maybe more, but we’re trying right now to reach more than a dozen people who went halfway through the registration process but didn’t finish it via PayPal. Without a complete registration, you won’t be on the map – so please make sure you have an e-mail receipt from PayPal, and if you don’t, please e-mail us ASAP – garagesale@westseattleblog.com. Also check your mailbox; we sent notes over the weekend to everyone for whom we don’t have a PP receipt. If you changed your mind mid-registration, no problem, but it would be great if you let us know.

Now, a bit about the lineup: The heart of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is the web of individual sales all over the peninsula – more than 250!!! Beyond that, we have the group sites – Hotwire/Ginomai in The Junction, C & P Coffee to the south.

We are in the mapmaking process currently and if all goes well, we’ll link to the online/printable maps here and on West Seattle Blog, starting next Saturday, since our goal is always to get the map out a week in advance.

With so many sales, we are advertising/promoting WSCGSD all over the region, but it also helps if you make sure your friends/relatives/co-workers know that this is THE day to come to West Seattle, shop the sales, visit local businesses while you’re here, sightsee, have a great day.

230 sales for 2014! If you’re having one, sign up ASAP – deadline is Wednesday night

Another awesome West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is ahead on May 10th – there is no question of that. If you’re planning on having a sale as part of it, and have been putting off registering – the deadline is almost here; 11:59 pm Wednesday night (April 23rd). We had a few form glitches late last night and early today but FIXED NOW! so just go here to sign up.

Twenty days until the 10th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day arrives on Saturday, May 10th – and we’re counting down to the registration deadline this Wednesday night (11:59 pm, to be precise). 190 sales are registered already – add yours by going here. About a week and a half left to go before the registration deadline, four weeks until sale day, and as of this very moment (drum roll,please) … 126 sales are signed up – big, small, inbetween – so another great day is definitely in store! If you’re just finding out about this, we (publishers of West Seattle Blog) coordinate the annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, second Saturday in May, which means May 10th this year, and registration is open until April 23rd – so if you’re interested in having a sale, sign up here! If you don’t have room for one, or don’t have all that much stuff, check in with Hotwire Online Coffeehouse in The Junction or C & P Coffee Company between Alaska and Morgan Junctions – both are group sites with room for multiple sellers. We’re still on track to start signups Monday (March 31st) for the 10th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day. Time TBA – we’re hoping by noontime, but sometimes it takes until evening to get the form bugs worked out. When we’re ready, we’ll have the link here and on West Seattle Blog. Two other notes:

Lora Swift of Hotwire Online Coffeehouse says they’ll have a group sale site again this year for those who don’t have enough stuff and/or enough room for a sale of their own. Sign up through Hotwire starting Monday.

In case you want to share photos and updates while enjoying WSCGSD as either a shopper or a seller (or maybe both!), we are going to use a social-media hashtag this year – Twitter and Instagram primarily, but since Facebook has stuck a toe into the hashtag waters, you can try there too. It’ll be #wsgaragesale … we’ll see how it goes.

P.S. Big sale in West Seattle THIS WEEKEND – benefiting South Seattle Community College Preschools – a consignment sale of kids’ items, with 100-plus participants, 9 am-1 pm Saturday (March 29th) at the VFW Hall in The Triangle (36th/Alaska).

Who wants sale ‘leftovers’? Lots of people! Here’s where/when to find them

Of course we hope that it’s another wildly successful WSCGSD and that you sell every last item you put out. But in case you don’t: For the 9th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day this Saturday (5/11/2013), three nonprofits have volunteered to accept dropoffs during and after the later hours of the sale, with special sites and hours. (And, we’ve added a school looking for books.) Here’s who, where – and what they are looking for:

WESTSIDE BABY: WS Baby’s “Spring Clean Drive” is culminating on this day and they’ll have donation collection trucks at these locations (not just for WSCGSD sellers with leftovers, but for anyone who wants to donate):

9 am – 5 pm, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, 4410 California Ave SW, in the West Seattle Christian Church parking lot behind Hotwire (enter alley off SW Genesee St.) **THIS IS ALSO A WSCGSD GROUP SALE SITE**

1-5 pm, Admiral United Church of Christ, 4320 SW Hill, (just west of California)

1-5 pm, Fauntleroy United Church of Christ/Fauntleroy Y, 9140 California Ave SW

NORTHWEST CENTER: Their regular dropoff spot in The Junction will be open later, till 6:30 pm, on sale day (Saturday, May 11th, only). Along SW Edmunds between California SW and 44th SW, parking lot south of Chase Bank drive-through. Please consider donating your garage sale leftovers to ARBOR HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL on JUNE 1 at the Annual Spring Carnival (3-6 pm).

The school is doing a drive for all gently used clothing, and household items and even small furniture under 50 pounds will be accepted. The school will receive 10 cents per pound for these donations. It’s West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day eve! 280 sales Saturday

So excited. Are you? Remember, if you’re just happening onto news of this – West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is NOT one big sale, but many, many sales all around West Seattle, 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 11th. It’s the second Saturday of every year, and this year we have 280 sales of all sizes signed up – group sites, multi-family sales, benefit sales, and more.
