Thanks again for a tremendous WSCGSD! In addition to the quick snaps your WSB co-publishers posted while traveling to visit some of the sales, contributing photojournalist Nick Adams was out capturing WSCGSD scenes too:

Seller Lori Freer, center, told Nick she made 5 times more money then she was thinking she would make.

Above, from left, Sue Orr, Connie Kieling, Marsha Morris, Brian Baum, and Una Wilson, some of the crew raising money for the American Cancer Society at 4136 Beach Drive SW.

Fabio was offered for only $35 at Elisa‘s yard sale at SW Spokane and Beach Drive.

Grace Lybecker walks with a painting of Jesus that she purchased for $10.

Danish Mother Day plates at 3633 Beach Drive SW.

Susan Terjeson browses shirts at a sale on Fauntleroy Way SW,

Items for sale at WSCGSD’s southernmost sale this year, the Cochran residence, in the 11400 block of 37th Ave SW.

A shopper checked out a rocking chair in Fauntleroy.

Bea Martin checks out the goods her friend Jay Atzbach found during the community garage sale.

Nancy Kyle, right, talks with Ed Edgar, and his wife Jo, left, at a Morgan Junction-area sale.
Thanks again, and we’ll see you next year – Saturday, May 10, 2014!

**REPUBLISHED ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON, NOW THAT WSCGSD IS OVER – FIRST PUBLISHED 5/6/13**
(UPDATED MAY 10)
Of course we hope that it’s another wildly successful WSCGSD and that you sell every last item you put out. But in case you don’t: For the 9th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day this Saturday (5/11/2013), three nonprofits have volunteered to accept dropoffs during and after the later hours of the sale, with special sites and hours. (And, we’ve added a school looking for books.) Here’s who, where – and what they are looking for:
WESTSIDE BABY: WS Baby’s “Spring Clean Drive” is culminating on this day and they’ll have donation collection trucks at these locations (not just for WSCGSD sellers with leftovers, but for anyone who wants to donate):
9 am – 5 pm, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, 4410 California Ave SW, in the West Seattle Christian Church parking lot behind Hotwire (enter alley off SW Genesee St.) **THIS IS ALSO A WSCGSD GROUP SALE SITE**
1-5 pm, Admiral United Church of Christ, 4320 SW Hill, (just west of California)
1-5 pm, Fauntleroy United Church of Christ/Fauntleroy Y, 9140 California Ave SW
Also, the WS Baby operations center in White Center will be open until 6 pm to receive donations, 10027 14th Ave SW.
Details: We’d love your gently used newborn – size 12 children’s clothing and baby equipment like car seats, strollers, high chairs, portable cribs. For a complete list of items we accept, go to Programs and Services.
NORTHWEST CENTER: Their regular dropoff spot in The Junction will be open later, till 6:30 pm, on sale day (Saturday, May 11th, only). Along SW Edmunds between California SW and 44th SW, parking lot south of Chase Bank drive-through. Here’s what they are accepting; if you’d like to schedule a Big Blue Truck pickup next week or beyond, here’s the information on that.
STOP N SHOP @ WEST SEATTLE SENIOR CENTER: Staying open until 7 pm on sale day (Saturday, May 11th, only) to accept donated items. 4504 California SW. Here’s a list of what Stop ‘n’ Shop is looking for.
Thanks for your generosity!
ADDED MAY 10th: Denny International Middle School is welcoming book donations – we just got the information:
Denny International Middle School Is Seeking Book Donations
**********************
West Seattle garage sale participants, are you interested in donating books to West Seattle public schools?
From: Principal Jeff Clark, Denny International Middle School
Date: May 11, 2013
Subject: Book Donations for Students
To: Participants in West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day
Overview:
Motivating and exciting students is an important part of education at Denny International Middle School and the other schools in West Seattle. One of the easiest ways to motivate students to read is to have books they are excited about reading. We are seeking donated books to help us to match each student to many appropriately-leveled high-interest books. Your book donation would help us with our efforts.
How You Can Help:
You can drop off books at any of three locations.
1. Roxbury Bowling Lanes, 2823 Roxbury St, 935-7400, from 11 AM to 7 PM, thru May 15th
Note: Roxbury Lanes, as part of its support for the Seattle community, will give a certificate good for two people for two free games of bowling for any book donation over 20 books.
2. Hotwire Coffee – 4410 California Avenue SE, any time during open hours thru May 15th.
Note: Hotwire coffee, as part of its support for the West Seattle community, will give a certificate good for $1 off any purchase at Hot Wire to the first 25 people who drop off 10 or more books.
3. Denny International Middle School, 2601 SW Kenyon St, 252-9000. Drop off at the front desk,
from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday to Friday, thru May 17th.
Some books may be more suitable for older or younger readers. We plan to sort the donated books and find appropriate places for them, including local elementary schools, Chief Sealth International High School, and the West Seattle Senior Center.
Thank you very much for considering book donation to help the scholars of West Seattle Schools!
We are also always looking for other ideas to encourage educational development. Please email your ideas to the person who developed this idea, jpotratz2@aol.com Thanks!
ADDED SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Arbor Heights Elementary has an event coming up in a few weeks at which it will accept donated items:
Got Garage Sale Leftovers? Bring your items to raise money for Arbor Heights Elementary!
Please consider donating your garage sale leftovers to ARBOR HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL on JUNE 1 at the Annual Spring Carnival (3-6 pm).
The school is doing a drive for all gently used clothing, and household items and even small furniture under 50 pounds will be accepted. The school will receive 10 cents per pound for these donations. Please come on by — the school is located at 3701 SW 104th St and enjoy the Carnival while doing something fantastic for your community!

It happens every year – a few people have to cancel their sales at the very last minute. We can’t change the “PRINTABLE” version of the list/map – but we are taking them off the online map, and marking the sale numbers as “canceled.” So if you’re shopping, PLEASE check before you head out tomorrow – in addition to marking the canceled sales on the map, we also are listing them on the map’s home page on WSB, and will have a “final” list here.

So excited. Are you? Remember, if you’re just happening onto news of this – West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is NOT one big sale, but many, many sales all around West Seattle, 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 11th. It’s the second Saturday of every year, and this year we have 280 sales of all sizes signed up – group sites, multi-family sales, benefit sales, and more. The list/map of sales is available two ways – a 14-page PDF with 7 pages of listings and 6 pages of map reference sections, and the clickable online map. Find them both here. And have a GREAT time!

Sorry it took a little longer than we had expected, but we now have the “printable” list of sales, with map slices for reference, available for perusal/download/etc. Here’s the direct link – if you’re printing, consider doing it double-sided if you can, because it’s a 14-page PDF – cover page, 7 pages of sale listings, 6 pages of map sections (had to break it up so there weren’t too many markers overlapping). And again, you can find the online version of the map – clickable, zoomable, and it works well with your smartphone too – by going here.

SATURDAY MORNING: It’ll have its own page here on the WSCGSD site in a bit, but for starters, find the ONLINE version of the map on our parent site West Seattle Blog by going here. Please note a few things (all also mentioned on the map page):
*If you are a seller, your official “number” is the one you see on the map/list – helpful so you can tell people, for shorthand, “Come see us – we’re sale #xx”
*To get the online map in a mobile-friendly version, use this link with your phone’s browser – you can even get the list full-phone-screen and click on individual sales for the address, description, and directions (probably best deployed if you head out next Saturday with a list of which sale numbers you most want to check out!).
The printable map/list will be ready this weekend too, but we always get the online/clickable version out first. Happy Garage Sale Day planning! Questions? garagesale@westseattleblog.com
SUNDAY NIGHT P.S. Our map software provider is working on an issue with the printable appearance of the map, so that version is still some hours away. The sale numbers and descriptions are the same as on the online map – it has ALL the information – only difference is that it is not configured to print well, so that’s why we create a separate, multipage-PDF version as a “packet” of info you can take along if you choose. Thanks for your patience!

Excited yet?
Only eleven days till Saturday, May 11th, with a record-setting 280 sales getting ready for the 9th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day.
A few updates:
*If you are a last-minute would-be participant looking for a group site, we now have three – the VFW Hall in The Triangle has some room at $5 donation/table. Not sure about room at the Hotwire Coffee and C & P Coffee group sites (we’ll be asking in a day or two) – check in with them to find out.
*This year, we have two partners for sellers to donate any leftovers – WestSide Baby and Northwest Center. WS Baby will have special dropoff spots, and NW Center as always is extending its Junction truck hours that day. Watch for full details and locations in a few days.
*That info will be in the “packet” for sellers that we will e-mail by week’s end, along with other assorted notes, plus the template for you to print your “official participant” sign.
*And whether you’re shopping or selling, please include Stamp Out Hunger in your plans – every year, this door-to-door food drive is the same day as WSCGSD (second Saturday in May), so just put your bag of donated nonperishable food out by your mailbox or door (if that’s where you get your USPS mail) first thing that morning!
As for us, mapmaking mode continues for a few more days. WSCGSD questions? E-mail garagesale@westseattleblog.com – thank you!

Saturday marks two weeks until West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2013, and we almost have the final count – looks like a record: About 280 sales! We’re finalizing the list for the map, and sending notes to people who didn’t finish the registration process, to make sure they really do intend to have a sale. We also are happy to announce that WestSide Baby is going to be a post-sale partner this year – if sellers wind up with any leftover items on the WS Baby needs/wish list, there will be three drop-off spots in West Seattle, plus later hours at WS Baby HQ in White Center, on sale day. Stand by for details on that later this weekend – the countdown is on!

More than 95 sales are now on the list for the ninth annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, coming up Saturday, May 11th. Registration will only be open for two more weeks, so you might as well commit now. One important note: If you have signed up, please be sure you have a receipt from PayPal as well as the WSCGSD confirmation note – our records so far show a few people have made it through the first part of the process but not the rest of the way – e-mail garagesale@westseattleblog.com if you’re not sure. Ready to sign up? Here’s the link!
Not enough room for your own sale? The two coffeehouses that usually offer a bit of individual space (both WSB sponsors) are doing it again. First: The courtyard/parking lot area between Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (4410 California SW) and Ginomai art center is open for registration, according to Hotwire proprietor Lora Swift – e-mail her at info@hotwirecoffee.com to get a free space! Lora says she will follow up as May 11th gets closer, with a PDF map of the courtyard/lot showing where you’ll be. Meantime, C & P Coffee Company also is participating again – check in at the shop if you’re interested in selling there. Whether you’ll be selling or shopping (or both), continue to watch for updates here and on the official WSCGSD Facebook page.. Thank you!

13 hours past closing time and we’re not sure we’ve recovered yet from West Seattle Community Garage Sale 2012. We decided to cover it as more of a travelogue (see the story and photos here), weaving a few contributed photos in with pictures we took while stopping at a dozen-plus sites … may not sound like much out of 245 but we were on the road continuously for five hours, with WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand driving, and hopping out to take photos and say hi, while your editor here (Tracy Record) kept downloading photos, writing, and updating the story from the passenger seat. By 2 pm, even our backup power was out, and we needed a little sustenance too, so it was back to the barn. The post-sale reports have been fun to read, and it was fun to see that people were really were out and about browsing, buying, and best of all, mingling … while reading news on the Web (our main business) is generally a solitary pursuit, we do seek to support the community by promoting events and activities that get people out and about, interacting, and this certainly counts. Next year’s date – May 11th!

It’s sunny, it’s perfect, and we wish you a terrific day. Especially if you are a seller, please send a photo of your sale if you can – we won’t get to anywhere near all of them during our photo runs – garagesale@westseattleblog.com – we like posting individual items here for posterity! (And include your sale #, please!)
One more time for people who just happen onto this site – the maps are here (note the link there to the PRINTABLE map and listings, as well as the online map you can use to pan, zoom, and click your way around – clicking any individual line on the right-side list OR any individual sale marker will bring up the “bubble” with its address and their short description). And sellers have been invited to post on the WSCGSD Facebook page – buyers looking for specific items too.
Have a great day!

It’s West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day Eve! Tomorrow’s our day of shopping and selling all over the peninsula … A few logistical notes right now:
LATE CANCELLATIONS: If you have already printed a map, please scratch off sales #71, #72, #149, #201, #247. (While their numbers remain on the online map, you’ll see in the list on the right side of that map that they are now marked as CANCELED, in addition to a couple others that already were marked that way on the map.)
TWO HIGH POINT SALES ON SW BATAAN NOW PROPERLY LOCATED ON ONLINE MAP: Our map provider uses data from Google and Mapquest, and yet it still couldn’t place SW Bataan in High Point in the right place. Sale #159 pointed this out, and sale #147 is affected too. Bataan is between Graham and Morgan, and both sales are within 2 blocks of each other, 2800 and 3000 blocks.
OVERLAPPING MARKERS NOTE: On the printable map, we have topped the map-section pages with information about overlapping markers. We have one error in this information – on page 3, it is correct that sale #57′s marker is under #125, but that is NOT because they’re both at Hotwire – #125 is the group sale at Hotwire but #57 is another big sale a couple doors down at the West Seattle Eagles’ aerie. The listing information for #57 in the text pages (it’s on page 7, second column) is correct, and on the online map too. (Note that they’re grilling burgers and hot dogs!) … Also, please note that marker #190 is behind #232.
Sorry for the glitches – a few are unavoidable, and we try to keep it to a few – get ready for a great day tomorrow!
ADDED LATE FRIDAY NIGHT: Sale 71 just canceled.

Now that it’s Thursday, West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012 is just two days away. Ready to sell and/or shop? Forecast hasn’t changed. This year, the bridges are all open (last year on sale weekend, there was a Viaduct closure, but no problems this time around). All factors are coming together for a great time. PRINTABLE MAP: It’s ready! Just finished the 12-page PDF – you can get it here, and it’s also linked from the WSCGSD page on our main site.
SEATTLE TIMES SHOWCASE: West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is the lead story on the “Around the Sound” page in today’s Times, distributed around the region, just one of many ways we’re getting the word out beyond West Seattle – since we’d love to see LOTS of visitors come shop our sales, and (later) visit our restaurants, bars, and shops:

And best of all, the forecast calls for sun on Saturday. Here’s hoping!

Now that it’s Saturday … we are one week away from the 8th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – 9 am-3 pm next Saturday, May 12th! As promised, the maps showing all 245+ sales – clickable online version and printable/downloadable PDF version – will be available today, and as usual, it’s down to the wire for us completing them, doublechecking them, etc. Just wanted to get a mention here in case you are a seller or shopper eagerly anticipating next Saturday – a few sellers have stumbled into PREVIOUS YEARS’ maps out there in the archives and mistakenly thought they had been left off the map – no, the 2012 maps are NOT online as of this early-early-am writing. We’ll announce it in our 5 official channels (here, West Seattle Blog, the WSCGSD Facebook page, the WSB Facebook page, and the WSB Twitter feed) when they are. Thank you!

Today (Wednesday, May 2nd) is the annual GiveBIG donate-a-thon – and while we have published a list of local participants on our main site, West Seattle Blog, we did want to give a special shoutout to Northwest Center, which is the official “leftovers partner” for Garage Sale Day, and is based in southwest South Park, along West Marginal Way South. (Garage Sale Day participants will get info in the next few days about how to work with NW Center after WSCCGSD if you choose.) Before 11:59 pm tonight, your donation will stretch further, thanks to a “stretch pool” from sponsors of GiveBIG’s coordinating organization The Seattle Foundation, as long as you donate through the specific links on TSF’s site – here’s the one for NW Center.

After registration closes, it takes a couple days to go through everybody’s registration forms, check the information, crosscheck for a variety of things, but as of today, we can tell you 250 sales are signed up for May 12th! Our plan remains as usual – have the maps available (clickable online version and printable PDF version) by next Saturday, one week till West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – so watch for news on that, as well as other previews. And if you have registered, PLEASE check the e-mailbox you used to register – there are still a few people who haven’t answered our notes about their “incomplete” status, and in a couple more days we are going to have to drop them off the map if we don’t ever hear from them. Thanks for your participation and stay tuned for previews! – Tracy

11:59 pm today, registration closes, so it’s last call – we are on the brink of 200 sales (a milestone we’ve passed each of the past two years, so this looks like a threepeat) and we’re thinking good thoughts for a WSCGSD that’s as beautiful as the past few Saturdays have been. 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 12th, is the big day, if you’re just tuning in to this … here’s the form.

More than 120 sales are now on the map for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012 – the six hours (9 am-3 pm the second Saturday of May,
which this year is May 12th) when our peninsula turns into Garage/Yard/Rummage Sale Paradise. We are now six days away from the official registration deadline – 11:59 pm next Wednesday (April 25th). That cutoff gives us just enough time to make the maps (which will be ready a week before WSCGSD) and launch the final round of promotion with something resembling an accurate total.
**Registration form’s here**
And here are two more notes:
**NOT ENOUGH ROOM OR STUFF FOR YOUR OWN SALE? Hotwire Online Coffeehouse and C & P Coffee Company (both WSB sponsors) are once again offering courtyard/yard space for small individual sellers. Inquire at either coffee shop (4410 California is Hotwire, 5612 California is C&P) or by e-mail – info@hotwirecoffee.com or candp@comcast.net.
**DON’T WANT TO SELL, BUT HAVE STUFF SOMEONE MIGHT WANT TO SELL? The Rainbow Girls will be on the map again this year, and looking for donations:
Cleaning out your closets? West Seattle #18 International Order of the Rainbow for Girls is seeking donations for our third annual garage sale Saturday, May 12th, 2012. If you have any small working appliances, furniture in good or better condition, tools and other household items that you would like to donate, please call Natalee Vroman 206-399-7748 or Jan Hunter 206-849-7906 and we will be happy to come and pick them up! Your donations are tax-deductible and we will provide you with a charitable contribution receipt. Rainbow Gets Girls Ready for Life! Check us out at www.gorainbow.org

Once again this year, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse and C & P Coffee Company are welcoming individual sellers to be part of a group space on West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 12th! If you don’t have enough room or enough stuff for your own sale, you can contact either coffeehouse – info@hotwirecoffee.com or candpcoffee@comcast.net – to get on the list to be part of the group sale. We are up to about 70 sales after the first week and a half of registration! You can sign up by going here.

Finally ready to go. Here’s the registration form. Everything is the same as last year – registration fees (we haven’t changed those since we knocked them down a notch when we took over WSCGSD in 2008), for example. Be sure to have all the info ready when you sign up – including what you want the ad for your sale to say in the map packet – even though it’s six weeks away, you probably know what your sale’s going to be about! And be sure to choose the right category for your sale in the dropdown box toward the start of the form. See you out there 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 12th!

Watch for news here sometime this afternoon or evening – soon as we make sure the form is in “all systems are go” mode. We’ll announce it in all WSB/WSCGSD channels (Web, Facebook, Twitter, etc.), so don’t worry, you won’t miss it.

While we continue recovering from West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2011 – are YOU recovered yet? – our friends at Shorewood on the Sound send word that their next Garage Sale Day is June 4th. They’re expecting at least 30 homes to participate, 9 am-4 pm that day, and they will have maps available at all entrances to their neighborhood, described as: Off of SW
116th and 28th, 26th and 21st. Also signs directing at 130th and Ambaum into our
south end of Shorewood. Keep an eye on shorewoodonthesound.org.
