Another sale day ahead! Shorewood on the Sound ‘Street of Sales’ on June 2nd

Just heard from Heather in Shorewood – which is just south of West Seattle – and their annual garage-sale day, Street of Sales, has finally gone online – here (and above) you’ll find the Google Map for their sales, this Saturday, June 2nd, 9 am-4 pm.

13 hours past closing time and we’re not sure we’ve recovered yet from West Seattle Community Garage Sale 2012. We decided to cover it as more of a travelogue (see the story and photos here), weaving a few contributed photos in with pictures we took while stopping at a dozen-plus sites … may not sound like much out of 245 but we were on the road continuously for five hours, with WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand driving, and hopping out to take photos and say hi, while your editor here (Tracy Record) kept downloading photos, writing, and updating the story from the passenger seat. By 2 pm, even our backup power was out, and we needed a little sustenance too, so it was back to the barn. The post-sale reports have been fun to read, and it was fun to see that people were really were out and about browsing, buying, and best of all, mingling … while reading news on the Web (our main business) is generally a solitary pursuit, we do seek to support the community by promoting events and activities that get people out and about, interacting, and this certainly counts. Next year’s date – May 11th!

Sale 41: Seattle Lutheran High School

Inside the Menashe Family Gymnasium at Seattle Lutheran High School, big sale with great stuff including furniture – Tyler, who had helped do some of the heavy lifting, is checking out one of the recliners. Free tote bags, too.

Sale #36: West Seattle High School girls’ basketball team

West Seattle High School girls’ basketball coach Sonya Elliott sent that photo from their sale site, #36, at the school (3000 California Avenue SW) – one of today’s benefit sales!

The 8th annual WS Community Garage Sale Day has arrived!

It’s sunny, it’s perfect, and we wish you a terrific day. A few updates for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012

It’s West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day Eve! Tomorrow’s our day of shopping and selling all over the peninsula … A few logistical notes right now:

LATE CANCELLATIONS: If you have already printed a map, please scratch off sales #71, #72, #149, #201, #247. (While their numbers remain on the online map, you’ll see in the list on the right side of that map that they are now marked as CANCELED, in addition to a couple others that already were marked that way on the map.)

TWO HIGH POINT SALES ON SW BATAAN NOW PROPERLY LOCATED ON ONLINE MAP: Our map provider uses data from Google and Mapquest, and yet it still couldn’t place SW Bataan in High Point in the right place. Sale #159 pointed this out, and sale #147 is affected too. Bataan is between Graham and Morgan, and both sales are within 2 blocks of each other, 2800 and 3000 blocks.

OVERLAPPING MARKERS NOTE: On the printable map, we have topped the map-section pages with information about overlapping markers. We have one error in this information – on page 3, it is correct that sale #57′s marker is under #125, but that is NOT because they’re both at Hotwire – #125 is the group sale at Hotwire but #57 is another big sale a couple doors down at the West Seattle Eagles’ aerie. The listing information for #57 in the text pages (it’s on page 7, second column) is correct, and on the online map too. (Note that they’re grilling burgers and hot dogs!) … Also, please note that marker #190 is behind #232.

Sorry for the glitches – a few are unavoidable, and we try to keep it to a few – get ready for a great day tomorrow!

Two days!

Now that it’s Thursday, West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012 is just two days away. Ready to sell and/or shop? Forecast hasn’t changed. This year, the bridges are all open (last year on sale weekend, there was a Viaduct closure, but no problems this time around). All factors are coming together for a great time. Check back here a little later for a few updates to your maps.

SEATTLE TIMES SHOWCASE: West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is the lead story on the “Around the Sound” page in today’s Times, distributed around the region, just one of many ways we’re getting the word out beyond West Seattle – since we’d love to see LOTS of visitors come shop our sales, and (later) visit our restaurants, bars, and shops:

One week to go, till West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012!

Now that it’s Saturday … we are one week away from the 8th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – 9 am-3 pm next Saturday, May 12th! As promised, the maps showing all 245+ sales – clickable online version and printable/downloadable PDF version – will be available today, and as usual, it’s down to the wire for us completing them, doublechecking them, etc. Just wanted to get a mention here in case you are a seller or shopper eagerly anticipating next Saturday – a few sellers have stumbled into PREVIOUS YEARS’ maps out there in the archives and mistakenly thought they had been left off the map – no, the 2012 maps are NOT online as of this early-early-am writing. We’ll announce it in our 5 official channels (here, West Seattle Blog, the WSCGSD Facebook page, the WSB Facebook page, and the WSB Twitter feed) when they are. Thank you!

West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day’s ‘leftovers’ partner is part of GiveBIG today

Today (Wednesday, May 2nd) is the annual GiveBIG donate-a-thon – and while we have published a list of local participants on our main site, West Seattle Blog, we did want to give a special shoutout to Northwest Center, which is the official “leftovers partner” for Garage Sale Day, and is based in southwest South Park, along West Marginal Way South. (Garage Sale Day participants will get info in the next few days about how to work with NW Center after WSCCGSD if you choose.) 250 sales for May 12th, with West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day two weeks away!

After registration closes, it takes a couple days to go through everybody’s registration forms, check the information, crosscheck for a variety of things, but as of today, we can tell you 250 sales are signed up for May 12th! Our plan remains as usual – have the maps available (clickable online version and printable PDF version) by next Saturday, one week till West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – so watch for news on that, as well as other previews. And if you have registered, PLEASE check the e-mailbox you used to register – there are still a few people who haven’t answered our notes about their “incomplete” status, and in a couple more days we are going to have to drop them off the map if we don’t ever hear from them. Last day to sign up for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012!

11:59 pm today, registration closes, so it’s last call – we are on the brink of 200 sales (a milestone we’ve passed each of the past two years, so this looks like a threepeat) and we’re thinking good thoughts for a WSCGSD that’s as beautiful as the past few Saturdays have been. 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 12th, is the big day, if you’re just tuning in to this … here’s the form. 

Six days left to register for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012

More than 120 sales are now on the map for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012 – the six hours (9 am-3 pm the second Saturday of May, which this year is May 12th) when our peninsula turns into Garage/Yard/Rummage Sale Paradise. We are now six days away from the official registration deadline – 11:59 pm next Wednesday (April 25th). That cutoff gives us just enough time to make the maps (which will be ready a week before WSCGSD) and launch the final round of promotion with something resembling an accurate total.

Once again this year, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse and C & P Coffee Company are welcoming individual sellers to be part of a group space on West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, May 12th! 2012 REGISTRATION BEGINS! Here’s the link to the form

Finally ready to go. Here’s the registration form. Everything is the same as last year – registration fees (we haven’t changed those since we knocked them down a notch when we took over WSCGSD in 2008), for example. Be sure to have all the info ready when you sign up – including what you want the ad for your sale to say in the map packet – even though it’s six weeks away, you probably know what your sale’s going to be about! And be sure to choose the right category for your sale in the dropdown box toward the start of the form. See you out there 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 12th!

Registration will start today – soon as the form is ‘all systems go’

Watch for news here sometime this afternoon or evening – soon as we make sure the form is in “all systems are go” mode. We’ll announce it in all WSB/WSCGSD channels (Web, Facebook, Twitter, etc.), so don’t worry, you won’t miss it.

2 months till West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012!

Time doesn’t just fly … it roars … it zooms … it is a blur. And here we are, two months away from West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2012, which will be 9 am-3 pm on Saturday, May 12 (always the second Saturday). We’re currently planning to open registration on April 2nd. More to come!

Shop the Shorewood garage sales on June 4th!

While we continue recovering from West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2011 – are YOU recovered yet? – our friends at Shorewood on the Sound send word that their next Garage Sale Day is June 4th. They’re expecting at least 30 homes to participate, 9 am-4 pm that day, and they will have maps available at all entrances to their neighborhood, described as: Off of SW
116th and 28th, 26th and 21st. Also signs directing at 130th and Ambaum into our
south end of Shorewood. Keep an eye on shorewoodonthesound.org.

Looking for yarn? Sale #9 has plenty! They’ve been tweeting about their sale, including this comment of note: “I’m still in a little disbelief that people aren’t buying books at our garage sale… comment was that nobody buys paper books now.”

Lots of sales in Arbor Heights this time around. Including Sale #253 at 10455 42nd SW, benefiting West Seattle Community Orchestras, a nonprofit group for all ages and skill levels!

Sale #31 – Ruby Room benefit at Cherry Consignment, 4142 California SW

Sale #31is unique – it’s a $10 dress sale at Cherry Consignment on the north end of The Junction, to benefit The Ruby Room, At 4142 California SW, where proprietor Nyla says dresses have been flying off the racks – but still a good selection left, at least when we dropped by!

Sale #118 – Freshy’s Coffee, going till 4 pm

From WSB contributor Ellen Cedergreen at Freshy’s Coffee across from Hiawatha on California – they’re going till 4. “Lots of books and DVDs. Very cool vintage clothes,” Ellen reports. In the photo are Carmela and Olivia.

Sale #223 – Rotary Club of West Seattle benefit at 5606 California SW

Perhaps no surprise that a construction company would have construction implements on sale during West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – that’s Gary Potter from Potter Construction, which is hosting the Rotary Club of West Seattle‘s benefit sale at 5606 California SW. Hard hats too!

Sale #251 – 10404 34th SW, benefiting Arbor Heights Co-op Preschool

We think this one is the sale with the largest number of participants – more than 100 families, if we recall correctly from registration, benefiting Arbor Heights Co-Op Preschool, which is part of the great network of cooperative preschools around the area. They promised some even-better deals after 1 pm, so if you see this in the last two hours of the sale, another reason to head south to Arbor Heights!

Sale #102: Mural Apartments in The Junction

In The Junction, Mural Apartments (WSB sponsor) has a sale indoors – multiple residents participating, and free popcorn! Mural is on 42nd SW just north of SW Edmunds, right across from Jefferson Square. We noticed lots of clothes, among other items.

Sale #152: Merrill Gardens-West Seattle, benefiting the Senior Center of WS

At Merrill Gardens-West Seattle (WSB sponsor), 4611 35th SW, they’re raising money for the Senior Center of West Seattle. It’s Christmas in – May! They did brisk business, even in the early going. Items included furniture:

At Sale #15, 7944 20th SW, you’ll find Chief Sealth Int’l High School cheerleaders – one of today’s school fundraisers. They’re also having a bake sale – lots of scrumptious-looking treats:

Beaucoup block sales during this 7th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – including this one for the “Camp Long South neighborhood,” near 34th and Brandon. We found computer equipment, bikes, and more.

Sale #126 – Benefit for lung-cancer research, 3222 64th SW

That’s Amy May, the volunteer coordinator for Lungevity, holding information about lung cancer facts, which are available at the sale. They’re organizing the first Breathe Deep Seattle walk/run – to be held August 13th at Lincoln Park. This sale reports they did great right out of the box. By the way, Amy also makes and sells hula hoops! (Our photographer reports she got one for $3.)

Sale #150 – we think

WSB contributor Jason Grotelueschen sent that photo, reporting the mannequin was “Drawing a crowd at 39th and Hinds. Unfortunately a breeze caught him about 10min later and broke his nose…he’s in the trash bin now.” We’re pretty sure that was Sale #150, 3816 SW Hinds …

Sale #176 – Relay for Life-West Seattle teams’ benefit at Bridge Park

Once again this year, teams for Relay for Life-West Seattle, the American Cancer Society fundraiser coming up June 10-11 at West Seattle Stadium, are raising money in a group sale at Bridge Park, 3204 SW Morgan. (You can stop by to use the restrooms there too, they tell us.)

We’re proud that R4L is one of the many community events West Seattle Blog is co-sponsoring this year.

Sale #240: 8414 42nd SW

As best we can determine, this is the closest sale to WSB’s Upper Fauntleroy headquarters. So we stopped by to say hi to Joe, Don, and Brooklyn the dog. We don’t know what they have left, but their original sale description included: Kayak, downhill bike, electronics, DVDs, books, clothes, household items.

Sale #142: Mountain to Sound Outfitters, 3602 SW Alaska

Lots going on in The Triangle, like this sun-bathed outdoor sale, right across the street from the VFW Hall. It’s where you’ll find Mountain to Sound Outfitters – pictured is Greg Whittaker, with some of the items (including skis, ski boots, inline skates and wheels).

In Gatewood, the sun is still shining bright, and you’ll find folks raising money for the Drillers softball team at 3533 SW Elmgrove, just west of 35th SW.

Sale #67 – 4200 Admiral Way, English Springer Rescue America benefit at Muttley Crew Cuts

At 4200 SW Admiral Way, you will find two sales – one of them is a benefit for English Springer Rescue America, at Muttley Crew Cuts. They’re selling $2 hot dogs as part of the fundraiser and Kelly from Muttley Crew Cuts just sent that shot of the dogs on the grill, getting ready for lunch (it’s 11:03 am as we write this).
