Today we’re spotlighting the donation drives that have been organized in connection with West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day this year. First: A book drive to benefit schools:
One of the easiest ways to motivate students to read and learn is to have books with topics that kids are excited about reading and learning from! Your donated books will make a difference! Over the past three years, West Seattle schools received more than 5,000 books for motivating and exciting students as an important part of education.
We will donate religious-theme books to religious schools in West Seattle, and elderly books to Providence. We don’t want violent or sexual-themed books.
West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is a tremendous source of books. We are asking people who have left-over books from their yard sale this May 13th (as well as anyone who has excess books), to please donate your books to West Seattle schools. And for those who donated in the past, Thank you!
You can drop off books at any of these locations through May 26th.

Click on any line on the online map to open the bubble with its description. More lists to come before sale day – which is this Saturday, May 13th, 9 am-3 pm (but check listings for sales opening earlier and/or staying open later).
9:08 PM MAY 5th: It’s Friday night and tomorrow’s the second-biggest day of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day season – the day the map goes public! We’re in the final stages of working on it tonight so we’re expecting to have it ready and available around noon Saturday (May 6th) – watch for the announcement here and on our partner site West Seattle Blog, where the main WSCGSD page with the online map, and the downloadable/printable map and listings, will also be linked from our navigation bar/menu when it’s ready.
If you’re a seller, the “packet” is going out tonight. But this site is the main info hub – we’re also working on the AFTER THE SALE tab, with info from the local nonprofits who are interested in any leftovers you might have. But before we get that far ahead, everyone think SUNSHINE! for Saturday, May 13th. We know more than 300 sellers will be spending this weekend readying wares from crystal chandeliers to SCUBA gear to a “’60s Coke machine” to “nerdy gifts” to a “1962 Aloha trailer” to a surfboard, a sailboat, sleds …
9:36 AM SATURDAY: Still on track for the maps in the noon vicinity (or shortly thereafter)!
The second Saturday in May is not only West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – it’s also the coast-to-coast food drive headed up by US Postal Service letter carriers, Stamp Out Hunger, and that goes for this year’s big day – May 13th – too.
Every year we joyfully remind WSCGSD sellers and shoppers to put out their donations by their mailbox (or door if that’s how/where you get mail) before they get going for the day – many residences get special bags earlier in the week, courtesy of the letter carriers, but if you don’t, you can still set out your donation in a bag of your choice. We do it every year too, before we head out to photograph some of the sales for ongoing all-day coverage.
Meantime, WSCGSD is just 11 days away and you’ll find the maps and list of sales linked here (and on our parent site West Seattle Blog) on Saturday – we’re continuing to work on them right now!
310+ sales are on the map we’re busy making this week – still on target for our annual promise to launch it one week in advance, which means this Saturday, May 6th, one week before West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2017, which is 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 13th. As we doublechecked the listings, we took some fun notes about what people are mentioning in their listings, and we’ll continue rolling those out in previews. Just wanted to let you know everything’s moving along – if you’re a seller, hope your sale preps are going well! Any questions, e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com.
310+ sales are signed up for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2017 – and registration is closed, as of 9 pm Thursday! We are now checking the listings so that if we have a question for you before we start work on the maps and listings, we can get it answered – watch your e-mail box! And if YOU have a question, garagesale@westseattleblog.com. Meantime, on to sale day – Saturday, May 13, 2017, 9 am-3 pm, can’t wait!
Good morning – It’s Thursday, April 27th, and that’s deadline day for signing up your sale for this year’s West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – 280+ sales are registered as of first thing this morning and registration closes at 9 tonight. Then we start getting the map and listings ready so they’ll be available a week in advance. Haven’t signed up your sale yet? Go here ASAP – thanks!
If you’re planning a sale for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2017 – the thirteenth year of sales of all sizes, all over the peninsula – you have until Thursday night (April 27th) to sign up! So far, more than 220 sales are on their way to the map, and if you’re joining, we’re looking forward to hearing about yours too. Just go here! If you’re looking forward to shopping … 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 13th, is the official timeframe for WSCGSD, but some sales will start sooner, some will run later, some even might start Friday and/or run through Sunday – that’ll be in the listings accompanying The Map, which will be out May 6th, giving you a full week to plan. More updates to come!
If you’re planning a sale during the 13th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – coming up Saturday, May 13th – you still have a little over a week to register. So far, we have 140 sellers all over the peninsula – individual sales, group sales, business sales, benefit sales, even a P-Patch plant sale – and are expecting a spectacular sale day! The map and listings will be available one week in advance; to be part of WSCGSD, you can go here to sign up.
Five days into our three-week registration period, and more than 70 sales are on the map for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2017, coming up 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 13th! They’re all over the peninsula, from North Admiral to Arbor Heights to Westwood to Highland Park – even a bit beyond (we have one in North Shorewood) – Morgan, Marine View, Seaview, Gatewood, Fauntleroy …
We have benefit sales, block sales, a P-Patch sale, business sales (including a guitar garage sale at Thunder Road Guitars, an arts-and-crafts bazaar at C & P Coffee Company)…
And if you are looking for someplace to sell because you don’t have much to sell, or you don’t have a space for a sale … Hotwire Online Coffeehouse in The Junction has a few spaces left – e-mail info@hotwirecoffee.com ASAP if you’re interested.
As promised, we have opened registration for this year’s West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – coming up on Saturday, May 13, 2017, 9 am-3 pm (you can start your sale early and/or late but that six-hour window is the “official” window for all). This is the 13th annual WSCGSD!
If you’re planning a sale, here’s where to go to register – any time you’re ready (signups will continue for about three weeks; we usually don’t set the exact end date until we see how things are going). Same classifications and fees as the 10 years we’ve been coordinating this. Before you register, be ready with your up-to-20-word sale listing – think about what you’re selling that’s most popular and/or most unusual. Any questions, garagesale@westseattleblog.com or our 24/7 hotline at 206-293-6302. We’ll be updating here and on WSB (including any multi-seller sites that offer space for people who have small sales/no place to host a sale – if your venue is planning on that, please let us know ASAP)!
If you’re here looking for information on West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2017 – good news! As always, the big day is the second Saturday in May, and this year, that’s Saturday, May 13, 2017. We always open registration in early April, and for this year, we’ve set the date – April 5th. Probably in the afternoon or evening, so when we’re ready to get going, we’ll post the link here and on our main site, West Seattle Blog. In the meantime, start thinking about the 20 words you’ll use to highlight your sale. Unusual item(s)? Popular item(s)? Offering refreshments? Catchy name for the sale? Or … ?
ABOUT WSCGSD: This will be the 13th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – tenth one coordinated by WSB, after its founders at a community-connection nonprofit called Megawatt presented it for the first three years, then deciding to disband and seeking someone else to take it over. It’s not one big sale, but rather many sales of all sizes, all over the peninsula, depending on who signs up and where they are – individual homes and apartments, block sales, schools, nonprofits, businesses, etc. The official hours are 9 am-3 pm, but you can start early and/or end late (and if you do, put it in your sale ad), as long as you are open those six hours that we promote for all sales. All the registered sellers’ information and locations goes into a map package that we make available one week before WSCGSD so you can start planning!
Once again this year, we can wrap up WSCGSD with a participant-made time lapse … in this case, Sale #59, a carport sale in Fauntleroy. We hope you had some fun, despite the rain, the first time we’ve had a drop of precipitation on WSCGSD since our first year presenting it, 2008, when a shower moved through around 8 am and then made way for dryness. Guess the odds were going to catch up sooner or later. See our as-it-happened coverage here on WSB … and mark your calendar for May 13, 2017, second Saturday in May, as always, with registration opening in early April and lasting most of the month.
We could go on … but you can also explore the list yourself. (For example, we started to make a list of sales with tools, but more than 40 came up, including #312, at the renowned West Seattle Tool Library, which was stocked in part with WSCGSD finds way back in its infancy.)
Happy Friday – we are now one day away from West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2016, 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 14th.
Tomorrow might not be the bright sunny WSCGSD we have been used to in recent years – though today we’re looking at another record high temperature – but currently, it looks like the showers will hold off until later in the day. (We’re hoping for post-4 pm.)
If there are any last-minute cancellations/changes, we’ll have them atop this site as well as the map page on WSB, so check there first thing in the morning. That’s also where we’re linking our ongoing previews, and planning on a few more before the day is out.
Whether you’re selling or shopping – good luck and have fun!
The 12th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is now exactly one week away! 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 14th, with more than 300 sales of all sizes, all over West Seattle. As promised, we’ll be publishing the map today – no exact time yet as we have a few last changes to make – but as soon as it’s up, we’ll announce it here, as well as on our parent site West Seattle Blog. The map page will have permanent links in the navigation bars atop both sites as usual.
Getting excited for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2016? We are! ~330 sales will be on the map when we publish it on Saturday (May 7th), one week in advance of sale day, which is Saturday, May 14th, 9 am-3 pm. Sales of all sizes, in all neighborhoods, with all kinds of stuff for you to browse and buy – stay tuned to see the listings and locations!
Lots of sales signed up at the last minute before registration closed last night (Wednesday, April 27) just before midnight – so it’s going to be another spectacular West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day of selling, shopping, and meeting your neighbors. 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 14th … the map will be out a week ahead of time … but what we’ll be working on later today (Thursday) is checking the list of sellers and, within a day or so, contacting anyone for whom we have questions (fee not paid, missing “ad” text, that sort of thing), so if you’ve signed up your sale, PLEASE keep an eye on the e-mail address you used, as we have to get this part of the process locked down within a few days. (And if you have a question, please e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com.) Thank you! Just 16 days to go!
If you’re planning a sale but haven’t registered yet – tonight (Wednesday, April 27th) is the deadline, 11:59 pm … the form closes at midnight. Dozens of last-minute registrations have come in this evening and we’re past 300 sales for the second consecutive year. WSCGSD is on Saturday, May 14th, and it’s going to be awesome. Soon as the deadline passes, we start working on the map, and we’ll be continuing regional promotion to invite garage-sale fans from all over to come visit that day.
Just three weeks now until West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2016 on May 14th, and almost 200 sales are signed up! We’ve set the registration deadline for this Wednesday night, April 27th, 11:59 pm – by then, signups will have been open for more than three weeks, ample time for the word to get around. Then, we start working on the map, which as always will be available in clickable online and printable/downloadable PDF versions, one week BEFORE sale day. Having a sale? Not signed up yet? Do it now – just go here. And if you have problems/questions, please e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com – thanks!
Saturday, May 14th, is ever closer, and the 12th annual West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day is now up to 180 sales of all sizes, all over the peninsula. If you’re just waiting excitedly to shop, remember, the map will be available a week in advance. If you’re planning to have a sale but haven’t registered – time’s running out, so head on over to The Form and get on the list!
Just four weeks now until the 2016 edition of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – our region’s BIGGEST event of its kind – with 145 sales on the list and headed for the map! Whatever you’re looking for, you’re bound to find it somewhere – and you’re bound to find at least one sale in your neighborhood. 9 am-3 pm Saturday, May 14th, is the date; the map will be available online one week before that. Registration continues for at least another week and a half, but don’t procrastinate if you’re planning a sale – just get it done, by signing up here. If you have a question, by the way, ask here or e-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com – thanks!
We’re now exactly one month away from West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2016 – and more than 100 sales are signed up! They’re all over the peninsula, from Puget Ridge to Highland Park, North Delridge to South Delridge, Gatewood to Westwood, Alki to Admiral to The Junction to Morgan Junction … group sales, solo sales, block sales … it all means we are in for another great WSCGSD on Saturday, May 14th. If YOU are planning a sale and ready to sign up – start here! If you’re planning on shopping, remember the map will be available a week in advance, so check here and/or our parent site West Seattle Blog after May 7th.
P.S. Questions? E-mail us at garagesale@westseattleblog.com.
If you’ve been part of WSCGSD in past years – we haven’t changed anything except expanding the word limit for your listing on the map to 20 words – the field in the online version has lots of room, but the printable/downloadable PDF is the reason we need to set a limit. The fees are the same as they’ve been since we took over WSCGSD in 2008; they cover our production and promotion costs (and anything left over supports parent site West Seattle Blog‘s ongoing operations as West Seattle’s 24/7 news source).
*Sale day is Saturday, May 14, 2016.
*Official sale hours: 9 am-3 pm, but if you want to start yours earlier/end it later, that’s up to you – you can say that in your “ad” text (but no late starts/early ends, though, it’s important to cover the official time period – thanks!).
*Registration gets you on the map, which is published here and on West Seattle Blog – as well as promoted/advertised regionally and in our social-media channels – with clickable and printable (PDF) versions. The map is ready a week in advance and assigns each sale a number, which you can use for cross-reference and for your own promotion (“come see us, we’re sale #33!”), etc.
*Same 3 sale categories: Individual, Organization/Business/School, Block Sale.
If you have a small amount of stuff to sell and/or no place for a sale, check in at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse ASAP for a free spot in the Hotwire courtyard or Ginomai across the alley. There’ll be one general map listing for Hotwire; if you sell there, you’re still welcome to buy your own (optional) mention on the list via the form above – just mention Hotwire/4410 California SW as the sale address.
P.S. We haven’t set the end date for registration yet – we usually wait to see how things are going – but we keep signups open for at least three weeks, so there’s plenty of time for you to decide whether to jump in.
As promised, we’ll be opening registration for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2016 today – not quite ready yet to launch the form but we expect to be, no later than early evening. The big day is Saturday, May 14th, and we’re looking forward to another fun one!
Two months away from this year’s edition of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – May 14, 2016 – and we’ve decided to open registration on April 4th. So check back that day for the registration form – and have fun in the meantime getting ready to sell and/or shop!
What a day it was – and now it’s history – the first 300+-sale West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day. (341 was the final total, after a few last-minute cancellations.)
Not only was it sunny … the temp hit 80. (Not until after the official closing bell at 3 pm, but it was warm enough by then – at one of the last sales we visited, in Highland Park around 2:30 pm, we spotted someone walking by with an umbrella.) THANK YOU for a great time. Here’s something to close with: Danny McMillin made a time-lapse video of his Alki sale:
Next WSCGSD is Saturday, May 14, 2016. We usually open in early April – so check back then! And enjoy some other neighborhoods’ garage-sale days in the meantime:
We’ve already mentioned that more than half a dozen sales promise lemonade. Here’s one more option, a Gatewood fundraiser for the earthquake-devastated people of Nepal:
Tagging onto WS Community Garage Sale Day tomorrow, kids from 5+ families in our neighborhood will be holding a bake sale / lemonade stand Saturday morning 9 am-noon to benefit Nepal SEEDS, a nonprofit organization working in villages in Nepal. Our friend and West Seattleite Cris Miller has been working with Nepal SEEDS for years and is on their board. They are in major fundraising mode to assist in earthquake relief and re-building in the villages they work in. Stop by for a treat and support a very worthy cause! The kids will be waving you down in the 7800 block of California Ave. SW, between Portland and Kenyon.
(UPDATED) As of midnight Friday night, our sale total is 341 – from the 351 original registrants. The online version of the map has been updated – but since the printable map can’t be changed, please scratch these four sales off your copy, cancellations that came in after the printable map was locked in:
#38, #42, #49, #153, #219, #247
If any other cancellations come in early Saturday (CALL, please, 206-293-6302), we’ll add them here as well as on the online map page. Thanks!
Sunshine is still in the forecast – warm, too (high in the upper 70s) – so our tradition of perfect garage-saling weather continues. If you are somehow just finding out about this, Saturday, May 9th, is the day, 9 am-3 pm, 340+ sales of all sizes all over West Seattle!
Also – for sellers and for people who might want the fun of shopping AND the fun of donation – our page listing “who’s accepting leftovers/donations” is now up and running. Wide array this time – dropoff, pickup, some open Sunday and beyond.
P.S. Any last-minute cancellations will be noted on the online map, and we will mention the sale #’s here too so that if you have printed out the downloadable version, you can scratch them off. So far, only two since the downloadable version went live – the online map is updated but for the printed version, please scratch out #42 and #219.
Now it’s down to sellers getting ready, shoppers making their plan, and waiting for Saturday to get here – the forecast looks incredibly perfect, mostly sunny and mid-to-upper-70s! We now have the downloadable/printable map/guide/list of sales ready to go – it’s here (and it’s long – 21 pages). And of course you can click, browse, search the official online map here.
And … it’s up. Online edition here. Printable version still in the works. Browse the 340+ sales, make notes on which ones interest you, plot your route!
As promised, the 2015 West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day map will be live (here and via West Seattle Blog) by day’s end – we’re just making some final tweaks. This will be the online version, with the printable/downloadable PDF version to follow. Meantime, are you ready for the big day, just one week away? 340+ sales! Stand by for highlights!
Just in case you’re wondering how things are going, some miscellaneous notes:
*We will have at least 330 sales – probably 340+ – depending on last-minute cancellations. Speaking of which, if you are a seller, this is your last chance to get off the map if you have to cancel … please call us, 206-293-6302, don’t e-mail, ASAP!
*The descriptions of sales and highlighted items are awesome as always. We took notes while proofreading the listings as part of the mapmaking process. Mentioned a few of them in this update yesterday on West Seattle Blog.
*We wanted to remind you that again this year, the second Saturday in May is ALSO “Stamp Out Hunger” – the door-to-door, mailbox-to-mailbox Letter Carriers’ food drive. Make plans to have a bag of nonperishable food to donate – set it out by your door/mailbox/wherever your letter carrier stops, before you head out for a day of shopping OR selling.
*We will be sending the sellers’ info packets on Friday. Watch your e-box (or if you requested postal mail, your mailbox).
*And again, the map will be available starting this Saturday. The online version is always the first one we get up – watch for the announcement here and on WSB.
*Invite your friends, relatives, co-workers, etc. to come over and garage-sale with you on May 9th – we would love to see people from all over the region as usual – here’s an 8 1/2 x 11-size poster you can print and put up on a bulletin board of your choice.
